I'm closing a deal to purchase a 35.5 that has been lying at the dock for a LONG time, and the salon table is seized. Have any 35.5 owners out there encountered a similar problem and managed to fix it? What's the secret?

Hinged panel or vertically?

Is a hinged seized up or is it that the table will not go up and down to make the setee a berth? If a hinge, consider the possibility that varnish or other woodcovering/cleaning liquid was used, ran onto the hinge, then allowed to dry. On a long piano hinge like on a table leaf, this could be sufficient enough to prevent motion. Just dab lightly with your favorite solvent and let sit while ensuring no drips run across the varnished table top. This happened to me on cabinet doors; every hinge squealed so badly it was nearly deafening to open any door. When removed from the door, I could not manually move the hinge at all. Soaking all the aluminum hinges in a tub of varnish remover overnight removed roughly 90% of varnish and now all hinges operate with no noise at all.

Two possibilities

If I remember the 35.5 is like my 37.5 with a panel in the table that has a handle for loosening a strap that goes around the mast compression post. If the table will not go up OR down then it might be that the strap has corroded or gotten stuck to the compression post. Try loosening the handle and turning the table. That may release the strap. I don't know if there's an easy way to check this visually. If the table will go up (but feel very heavy) but not down the problem may be with the counterweight inside the compression post. It may be stuck inside from corrosion. I haven't heard of any way to get to that short of unstepping the mast and removing the post but you might get away with running some light machine oil down the inside of the post and blasting the post (repeatedly and with great patience) with a hair dryer to try and break the counterweight free. Good luck. Jim "Prospect"

table

i purchased an 89 35.5 in seattle, the boat is great. while crossing the gulf of alaska i descovered that my table only rotated, it does not lower to convert to a berth. i still dont know if that was the setup for 89 models only, but i was surprised. I was under the impression all dinetts converted to berths on this model
