Seize the Stay

While reading about preparing spars for stepping in the manual to my newly acquired Morgan 41 I realized that, once again, I need to ask the advice of more experienced skippers.

The manual said that the stays should be seized after the mast is stepped to ensure that the spreaders bisect the stays. I was hoping to seize the stays and put the spreader boots on while the mast was still on the ground. How difficult is this to do while hanging away from the mast in a bosun's chair? Can anyone recommend the procedure for seizing or a source I could go to? The stay is 7/16" wire and the spreader has a foil shape that is over 5" wide and 1 1/4" thick. I have yet to find spreader boots large enough to fit. I hate the thought of sewing leather in place while hanging in the air away from the mast.

Monel wire

I seize with monel wire, available at West Marine. Not cheap, but strong and corrosion resistant.

Spreader boots are unnecessary. Just make sure you seize so that the twisted part cannot catch a sail. The boat yards wraps mine with white PVC tape.

Can be tough to do from a bosun's chair, but I've done it. How fit are you?

I am fit enough to go up in a bosun's chair

and enjoy it. However, I'd rather go up for recreational purposes rather than to work. It is hard enough to do good work on the ground and can be a real challenge when working from a bosun's chair while hanging on to a shroud. Also, there is always the chance of dropping things and making chips in the deck.
