Hi everyone, I'm trying to compile a list of Herreshoff Meadowlarks and their location for the purpose of creating a Meadowlark owners email group. The Meadowlark was L.F. Herreshoff's design #88 and was penned in 1948. His design goal was to create a cruising length sailboat with the least possible draft for sailing the waters of Florida and the Bahamas. Over the years the Meadowlark was produced in many different versions, home-built and manufactured, and in many different materials, wood, fiberglass, steel and ferro cement. The Meadowlark's original design was 33' and was to be constructed in wood plank or plywood. The wooden version was featured in Rudder and Wooden Boat Magazine. A 37' fiberglass version was manufactured, per order, in Massachusetts in the 70's and early 80's, by Allan Vaitses. Short story by Tom McGuane
If you have not already read or heard of this short story, Tom McGuane wrote about puchasing and sailing a Meadowlark while he lived in the Keys. I think it is in "An Outside Chance, essays on sport", but it may have been in "To Skin A Cat" which is a collection of short stories. Sorry I do not remember the story title, I think it will be obvious if you check the contents. I sail the shallow Mississippi gulf coast waters and after reading that story always hoped some extra cash and a Meadowlark for sale would come to my attention at the same time. The Meadowlark seemed like a fast, close to perfect, shallow water cruiser. Your version of the boat looks to have a self tending jib, it must be easy to sail? Good luck with your site, maybe you'll get my cash and a Meadowlark together one day.

FYI There is a Meadowlark for sale at Green Turtle Bay up at Kentucky Lake that has been on the market for better than four years. The owner was an older guy that may not even be alive at the present time, but the boat is still on the market. I used to be berthed right next to it and it was in pretty good shape, at that time anyway. It might be doable.

Sorry, but that's the best I can do. The fellow that owned the Meadowlark wasn't the most talkative person that I've ever been around and I just passed it off to his age. Like I said, I was berthed right next to the boat and only saw it out of the slip once. The name was the "Mary Lee". I can't believe that there would be a problem identifying the boat if anyone up there would ever return your message. It's the only Meadowlark there and for that part the only one, outside of pictures, that I have ever seen around here. The old sales staff at yacht sales are not there anymore and I can't give you a name. I don't know how they do business up there right now. You might try acting like your interested in buying it! That would probably be more temptation than the sales people could resist. Luck!!
