of moving 34' plus sailboat by land transport. Specifically, to what degree does one need to dis-assemble the mast? Looking at possible move of 35.5 Hunter inland. I understand labeling all rigging & cables, removing boom, reef lines from mast and deck, boom vang , traveller connections, etc. Is it necessary to dis-assemble spreaders? Can you just wrap forestay, backstay, shrouds, and halyards around mast w/spreaders in place? Pull small messenger lines through clutches and under sea hood, through deck organizers up to mast area? Looking for advice, must do's, don't do's, "wish I hadda done's" that anyone who has "been there, done that", can offer.

How far are you planning to

go with this move? Moving a boat involves gale force winds for the duration of the trip on the highways. For a short haul you can just secure the standing and running rigging by lashing it in place. But for a long haul you may want to move everything that you can into the shelter of the cabin.

Saran wrap that mast..

If you could secure everything to the mast so that NO WAY the stuff comes loose, I dont see why you have to dissasemble everything. My H34 had the spreaders on when transported and all the cables. They also used 100 lbs. of wrap so that it had about 40 layers of saran wrap. They also used some pretty fancy trucker knots I would like to learn!

Do not trust a pro blindly

If you haul it yourself do what Ken says, If you hire a pro do what ken says. Make sure you and the boat and the pro are insured. Good luck

Short or Long

Trailor sailor's mostly are much smaller boat and lighter shorter mast, take it all off. The mast really needs to be empty that big a boat the mast completely empty is mounted to side of trailer doing the trucking. If you try mounting the mast on top of the boat while trailering it would be very hard protecting the mast from damage and the top of boat also. It needs to be really well padded and really well secured from moving around while on the road. Try calling pro trucker for their input and what just said they will tell you same,I have been talking with truckers at marina unloading boats from florida to Ct and NY, they all truck the boats with empty mast mounted to side of trailer.
