I just bought an 1980 O'Day 23. It is still in the water. It doesn't have a trailer, so I will be hiring someone to transport it to a new marina. My question is how do you secure the mast to the boat for transport. Can it be secured to the pulpits or does it need special supports. Also, what do you do with the boom when trailering and during winter storage.

I have a cradle made out of 2X4 for the stern. On the pulpit I simply use an old life vest between the mast and rail and secure with several bungees. I leave the rigging on and bungee it all so the wind does not catch. If I am travleing a large distance I place a 4x4 between the tabernacle plate and the mast.

The boom I usally place inside the cabin.

Scott has it. I used a 2x6 for a little extra width on each side of the boom and bought a few extra pinons and just slot it into where the rudder would be. I lashed my boom to the stanchions versus doing it inside the cabin.

Scott,

just bungee the mast to the the push/pull pits, and add a center support midspan. Be sure there's no way the shrouds or running rigging car fall to the road. We trailer our 25 every weekend. I made a mast cover that has every strap required to tie the mast down, as well as support for the roller rurler. Makes things easy.

You're paying someone to move your boat?? Its their problem.

Seriously, if someone else is responsible for the move then they make the call. If they don't know out how to get it done, you've hired the wrong guy.

+1 on the transporter being responsible.

But since you may be hiring a friend to do this, I will add to Scott. I wrap a few 2 x 12 pieces in carpet and lash them on the cabin top. Then I lash a couple fenders on top of that. Then I lash that to the mast to support the center of the mast.

Use some tie-down straps at the bow and stern to strap the mast to the cleats.

Look at Lowes for the giant, rubber coated, bright orange, twist ties. I love those things for tidying up and strapping stays, shrouds, halyards, furler, etc to the mast.

Thanks,

Andrew
