Just bought an old 23.5 hunter. What is the recommended shackle/method to secure the mainsail tack? On other boats a 6mm twisted shackle would go through the tack eye and secure to the hole on the goose neck but the hole there wont take a 6mm shackle?

If you contact the spar mfg (or someone that sells the parts), they can usually supply replacement parts.

thks for the reply. The goose neck on the mast has a horizontal hole and a large bulls eye (W shaped metal) threads through it presenting 2 lugs 1 either side of the goose neck. I guess you just tie the reefing line or a cord through the mainsail tack to the lugs.
The tack grommet slips over one side of the w shaped metal bracket. The other side is for the reef point grommet.
I believe the one on your boat is Double Reef Hook: Z-1188RH

The reefing line goes through the boom and attaches to the reef grommet on the leech. At least, that's the way we had ours rigged, right or wrong
