Securing Anchor Rhode

I noticed this thread on the Catalina site. My slip in Long Beach, Ca was 3 from the end of the gang way. A lot of transit boats would tie up there and I loved talking to these sailors. What great stories they told about their adventures.

One day I was airing my anchor rhode and talking to one of the cruisers at the same time. Most of these guys use all chain and the topic of how one secures the chain to the boat in the anchor locker came up. I thought they'd bolt the chain to a eye bolt in the anchor locker but he told me that's very dangerous because in a serious situation where they have to get away quickly they can't fool around with bolts etc. They use a rope attachment which they can cut quickly. He had a float attached to the chain so that after the emergancy he could come back and recover his rhode. I sent that idea to one of the sailing mags, giving full credit to my dock vistiter and they sent me $50.

Do any of you have any ideas on this subject?

Of course, you spent most of the $50 on wine, women, song, and boat stuff! The rest you just wasted!


Actually, I have used two different methods to secure the anchor rhode to the boat. The anchor line I used on the Odays we owned would not fit into the small loop in the anchor locker, so I used a smaller line doubled to tie the end of the line to the loop. We of course used the cleats on the bow for anchoring. On some small daysailers without anchor lockers on the bow we have tied a bowlin around the mast using the end of the anchor line. And again, cleating the anchor line at the appropriate length.

i use a caribiner in my anchor locker on a figure 8 of chain around the below decks portion of my bits--is no stress on this caribiner. chain stays put.

Yes not much thought is given about how we attach the bitter end of the rode to the boat. It is a very smart idea on an all chain rode to attach it with a piece of rope so that it could be easily released in an emergency. Having a float attached to the bitter end saves $$$. 31 seahorse: Phil, you're right -- that's exactly how I wasted the $50 and in fact all my money and I've got a coffee cup with that exact saying to prove it. Most of my boat stuff came from Garhauer Marine. I "test drove" a lot of their products and got to keep it when I was done.

I see you're from Cape Coral, FL. We came very close to buying property there. We had the lot and house picked out near Tarpon Point ( I think that's the name of the YC) but unfortunately my wife couldn't get a transfer from her company so the deal fell through.

Anchor locker? Y'all sure are fancy!

I've got mine in a rubbermaid tote. Bowline around the mast is my approach to keeping it from going overboard.
