The people on this site have always been an excellent source of information. I posted this question a week ago - got 80 plus "looks" but not much help. This is really important to me and would like your cooperation to try again. Please take a second look. Thanks Dave

I need some info on an old O’Day 22. I have a 1978 O’Day 23 and have sailed often on a 1979 O’Day 22 belonging to a friend. This old 22 is for sale and I recently inspected it. It does not have a serial number on the transom as the 78 and 79 both do so I can’t tell what year it is.
On the two I am familiar with – the rope and cable to the centerboard come up through a pipe which extends from the bottom of the boat to the deck in front of the companion way entrance to the cabin.
On the O’Day which is for sale, there is a hole in the cabin floor (see picture). It is a foot or so forward of where the pipe is on the other boats. There is no rope exiting the hole (but that may not be a big deal) I question if the water line on the outside of the boat is higher than the exit hole in the cabin – what keeps the water from flooding the cabin? All this looks like “factory condition” not like someone cut off the pipe or otherwise “repaired” the cabin sole.

Anybody have first hand knowledge of this “model” of O’Day 22 or an explanation of what is going on here?

Thanks. Dave

Make an offer contingent on what happens when the boat goes in the water.

I have been asked to BROKER this boat for the owner. I don't feel comfortable doing that with this as an open question. On the other hand, if it is no problem, I don't want to deprive the seller from making a deal. Dave

My 75 22 has a bilge pump in exactly the same place. The hose comes out on the starboard side just above the waterline about 3 feet aft of the hole you see there.

I can offer a few clues.

The boat predates HIN (hull identification numbers) therefore look for a makers plate inside.

Probe the "hole" with a stick.

Is the boat on land or floating?

Pour water into the hole and see where it comes out.

look for a center board pennant.

If the boat is on land confirm that is still has a center board. They sometimes get lost.

Inspect the boat as if you were looking for reasons to tell your best friend not to buy it. Because that is exactly what you are doing.

Ok Dave what does the OWNER say about it ?? That would be my first source of info. And if you have any doubts about anything the owner might say walk away from brokering this boat. How much commision can there be on a 70's Oday 22 to make this worth you time and effort ? ? Just for what it is worth it simple looks like someone drilled a hole. As suggested you may need to investage it to see where it goes to. If you do brokere it stick a "as is / best offer " sign on it and hope it sells for a couple of hundred dollars. The boat was only $2800. new plus some options see link for some more info. http://www.gjenvick.com/BangorPunta/ODay/1973-Catalog-ODay22.html

More info from Dave…
The “hole” has a little water in it. The boat is on land – on a trailer. Can’t tell if the center board is “in there” or not. There is no pennant coming out of that hole or anywhere else I can find.
The current owner is in his 90’s. Bought the boat 4 or 5 years ago and never put it in the water… now wants to sell it.
My commission is 10 percent. I am retired and really not in this for the money. I just hate to see a sail boat sitting around not being used.
I have a really bad feeling about this one – maybe I should just pass on it.
Thanks for all your input… it has helped.
Regards, Dave

It is the access hole for the builge. I seem to remember reading that the builge pump was an option. In all likelyhood the hole you see was there to allow a pump to be set in there and then the water pumped into the cockpit where it would run out of the little hole in the rear.

Thanks for trying to help the owner

Old Salt - thanks for trying to help the current owner. Anyone in their 90s could really use any help they can get and if it will help him to get rid of something that is probably slowly decaying just sitting there it would be helpful to him. So, to that extent, I'd encourage you not to give up if you can help it.

Based on the previous posts about the hole, it kinda sounds like the last one (wish we could read the previous posts while writing a reply) pretty much confirms previous suspicions.

If it's been sitting on a trailer, before it is moved one might want to throw some grease on the wheel bearings and check the tires for cracks and sun damage.

I'm a little curious about the hull number. You said a similar aged boat had one but this doesn't? May have been repaired over the years or covered up for some reason, in which case, I don't want to know the reason.

We still have our Falcon 16 which pre-dated the O'day 16. They made some nice practical boats back then. Seems so many of the newer ones are geared for sport sailing and not sailing comfort. Plus, the new ones are really, really expensive!

The 10-percent is nothing, and like you said, trying to find a good home for this old boat is more a labor of love. With your computer savy you would have an easier time finding a new owner than the current owner.

John, I use the quick reply under the last post which allows me to still read everything in the thread!
Seems that I have read that prior to hull numbers being mandantory on the transom they were still somewhere on the boat...you just had to look hard for them. I was also thinking that boats made after November--1972 had to have the HIN on the transom.
I'm guessing that because there is not one on the transom that it may be a 72 model.

More from Dave

When I was in the cabin I did not see any hull plate registration number but I will look some more. My O'17 has a plate with serial number in the cockpit just under the tiller. Looked there but did not find one on the 22.

I got into this because I felt sad to see usable sailboats just sitting around going bad. Also, it has given me a reason to keep "messing around" with boats. I have an O'day 17 which is 45 years old and actively sail an O'day 23. However, it is getting harder and harder each year, this well may be my last year to own a boat. Will just sail with friends after this year.
Thanks again to all who responded to my question. Dave

It would appear that from your listings you have already made a decision to list/broker this boat.

I have a 74 O'Day22 with a hole in the cabin floor in that spot. That is where i put the pump in to empty the bilge. My 22 is a fixed/shoal keel.

Yes I decided to continue to list the boat. The info you all provided - indicated that the boat is not damaged nor has a questionable modification been made. That said, I will be sure that any prospective buyer understands the questions I had and sees the hole that started all this.

My O'Day has the same hole for the bilge pump and it is fixed keel also. I think it is late 70's. Dave Cobb.

I sold my oday 22 from the 70's 12 years ago, but it had that hole for the bildge and it was suppost to be there, no big deal. sometimes I would spot moisture in it but again that was not a big deal. It will drain when its more then typical moisture that collects in a boat
