I have a 2003 Hunter H260 with Doyle mainsail. We were in > 21 knots of wind last time out and of course we reefed the main. I thought it might be a good idea if our main had another reef point. How difficult and costly would it be to have another reefing point added?

One thing

Do you have a space in your boom for a second reef line? If so you can add the extra cringles, of course. A job for a sailmaker because they'll have to be reinforced.

What I did

I just bought a new main, I incresed the roach by 12% , full battens and added a second reef. The boom alowed me a second line for the second reef so everything worked out. I have a solid boom vang for more control. The only thing that I haven't got a handle on and don't care to much for is the rams head (that's what I know it by) the peace that holds the tack of the sail (foot-Luff)to the mast, I could use some help with some sugestions, the sail sometimes jumps out of the rams head even when I tighten down on the outhaul.

2nd Reef

Allan, As long as you have the boom set up for a 2nd reef it is not problem to add one to the sail. We would charge about $150.00 including the intermediate reefs points but not the small line to tie the reef down. you can use sail ties for this if you want. Thanks, Bill C. Doyle Sails

SECOND REEF

Wright and Bill... I also have a h260 (2001) and can see the advantage of a second reef. Is a second reef line really needed? I was thinking of using the one and only reef line I have and running it through a snap/sheeve so that I could just snap into the reef point that I wanted. This might make it a bit less "jiffy" but shouldn't add a minute to the process. Your thoughts? Thanks, Paul s/v The Lord Nelson

Second Reef Line

Paul, While not having a second reef line is lees than ideal, there is no reason that the single reef line can't do double duty. It will take longer to shift from the first to second reef. To save time you can run a light tag line up through the second reef clew ring. When you want to reef you can use this line to pull the reef line up through the second reef and back down after you have pulled it out of the first reef. Thanks, Bill C. Doyle Sails
