Hello Group, my name is Don and I have a question regarding the Mac 26C. I know of Mac's that have crossed gulf stream and gulf of Mexico waters to sail to The Dry Tortugas and the Bahamas. Their are several Florida sailing clubs who do this kind of thing regularly. would some of the other Mac owners please tell us about thier sailing or crusing experience's in thier Macs. Will the boats ( all things being equal )handle overnight passages in the Sea Of Cortez, or in the Gulf of Mexico? How about the Great lakes (Apostil Islands parks )? I have been to Lake Mead With other Mac owners, I did not have a Mac at the time. I had an ODay 20. I know Walt has been to Lake Powell, that however is not so much a sailing trip as it is a motor cruise. Thanks in advance for any responce you choose to make. i THINK IT IS SEAWORTHY

I sail the San Francisco Bay Regularly, and I have even gone outside the perpetual boundry of the Golden Gate Bridge, and my Mac 25 has done a great job. I think if you are willing to take the challenge, then you will be surprised what these boats will do. The older Macs are great, and very forgiving. I would go to the sea of Cortez, but I wouldn't want to pull it to Mexico. But seaworthy.... I say yes if you are packed and ready for the challenge. I have had mine it 5-7 foot swells, and I did get tossed a bit, but the frequency was pretty short, but a reefed main and a good crew you can do it. Good luck... Gregg

Macs on Lake Superior

We have chartered larger sailboats to explore the Apostle Islands. My comfort level is much higher with the heavier boats than our Mac on big water. But, that is more an issue with me and my perception of my sailing abilities than with the Mac. On days with 25k winds and 4-5 foot seas I had nothing but a smile on my face sailing a C&C - I don't think I would have felt the same way in a tenderer vessel like our Mac 26. We've been to chartering schools up there and our captain said there are many Macs on Lake Superior. A friend trailered his Mac up there last July and the wind was strong enough that he was more comfortable motoring and he is pretty fearless on the water. I've heard our Macs can take most anything that is thrown at them, I think it has more to do with the abilities of the captain rather than a lack of seaworthiness with our MacGregors.
