On our 1986 Hunter 31 we have a SeaWard water heater. (not sure if it is orginal equipment). He is no longer provided hot tape water off the engine. Does not appear to be leaking. The hoses to and from the engine are hot. Can this water heater be worked on or does one just have to replace the entire unit?

Water heater replacement

Ed: I had the same problem last year with my 6 gal. Sealand tank in my "87" Hunter 31. I replaced it with an 11 gal. tank from Sailnet. A little longer but was able to jocky it in place with very little trouble and I gained an extra 5 gals of water. You will add an extra 40 lbs of weight to the starboard side if that is any concern to you. Hoses from the heat exchanger did not have to be changed but with my set-up I did have to add pipe (hose) to the hot and cold taps on the front side. The six gal. tank is a direct replacemment. Try this first

The Seaward 6 gal. heater has a high limit breaker located behind a small metal panel. It could be tripped. It also uses a typical electric water heater element that can be replaced. If the high limit switch doesn't work, try removing the element and taking it to an appliance parts store and replacing it.
