I stumbled across a 2/15/05 message from the owner of Seatoy of Darien CT while doing an archive search. He stated that he was going to name his next boat Winter's Dream. My boat had that name since 1979. It's documented with the Coast Guard, but that probably doesn't protect the name. Two other boats in IN and AZ use Winter's Dream. There probably are more. Nobody owns a boat name, but I would appreciate it if the owner of Seatoy picked another name for his next boat. Using Winter's Dream could make him as crazy as I am about all sailing things. I apologize to Seatoy for writing this, but I couldn't help myself.

Maybe you’d rather not know, but there is a San Juan 24 in our marina named Winter’s Dream. It’s owned by a woman with the last name of Winterhalter. I wonder if she minds you using her boat’s name. I can’t say who was first with that name.

Richard, I admire the expertise you demonstrated when you pulled up all of the Winter's Dreams from the Coast Guard documentation files. I never knew that the file existed. Good job! I won't worry about sailors using my boat name in the future, unless they sail on Lake Michigan where I can ram them! (Just kidding)

Dear Jim, Over the last 20 years, I have compiled a great list of unique sailboat names. I would be happy to share the list with you. Please contact me by replying to this forum and I'll share it with you, but only if you promise not to use my boat name, Winter's Dream. If you're ever on the Wisconsin side of the lake, look for me. I'll buy you a good Wisconsin beer.

Ms. Winterhalter deserves to use the name Winter's Dream more than I do, but unless she painted it on before 1979, my boat's name preceeded her's. I really admire lady sailors because my wife is deathly afraid of water, can't swim, and doesn't like sailing. She tags along because she wants to be there when I drown sailing or get killed driving 62 miles one way to my boat in heavy high speed freeway traffic. I have to make a confession to you, Jon, and anyone reading this. I purchased my boat when it was five years old. The name was already on it. I loved the name, but would not change a boat name if threatened with eternal damnation. An extreme case of bad luck struck me when I changed the name of my previous boat from Jive Turkey to Moon River. Our washer, dryer and car quit working after the name change. Then I was laid off from my middle management job at a national steel company. I had to sell my boat at a loss because I couldn't make boat payments and feed three sons and a wife, although I was tempted to starve them in order to keep sailing. My sailor sons were willing to catch Lake Erie fish to eat and keep the boat. The year was 1982 and the unemployment rate was 12%. It took one year and a 400 mile move to get another job. I bought Winter's Dream, along with the privilege of sailing on my second Great Lake. This is probably more than anyone wants to read, especially Jon, who was kind enough to write a short reply to my original posting. I'm sorry if I bored anybody.
