searching for the perfect head...;-)

I've decided to replace the head on my newly acquired Grand Soleil 35. It has a Jabsco electric head with ancient plumbing and a stainless steel holding tank. It all works, but it's all going away.

I've ordered Peggy's book. Looking forward to reading it when it arrives. In the meantime, I've decided that no one makes the perfect head. I believe that I'll end up building one from various parts of different systems. There's very little information on the 'net about interchangeability between models, and that's the beginning of what I need help with.

My first constrain is a physical size limitation. I have a 6.25 inch deep X 8.5 inch wide platform on which to install a new head. I might be able to kluge that by a few inches with a nice board or something, so maybe a maximum of 8.25 deep X 9.5 wide in a pinch. This platform is about 10-11 inches off the floor already, so I need something kinda short, else I'll have to build a step or something.

Second constraint is that the wife says it must be electric, and must not smell. So just in case it helps, I'll be using fresh water rather than seawater. I have a 100 gallon freshwater tank and a pressurized water system, but I wouldn't mind installing a separate water tank just for flushing, if that works out to be a better idea.

I like the "output" process of the Lavac, but I don't like the vacuum intake of the flush water. Wet seat, leaking seals, can't see what's going on, 2 minute waiting period, yuk. I'm planning on one switch for a waste pump, like the Lavac uses, and a separate switch for flush water. I'm thinking you'd be able to run the flush water pump and the waste pump separately and independently just long enough to "get the job done". I don't anticipate any "potty training" issues with children or landlubbers, so nevermind that.

Make sense so far?

Equipment questions:

Bowl, seat/lid...
Will any other bowl fit on a Lavac base?
and/or
Will any other seat/lid fit on a Lavac bowl?
Is the Thetford ComfortMate just as simple as the Lavac? It might just fit, without the pump on the side.
Are there any other really simple seat/lid, bowl, base combinations that I'm missing that might work?

Pumps...
I'm looking at the Whale Gulper Toilet Pump. There's a Jabsco one that might work too, I think the Lavac ships with the Jabsco one.

For the flush water, I have no idea.

Hose...
Any reason not to just go with Trident? Seems to have a decent reputation.

Holding tank, etc.
still working on this...

Thanks for reading this! I'm really looking forward to figuring this out, and I really appreciate any help!

Cheers.

Reinventing the wheel will cause more problems than it will solve

I think the Raritan "Marine Elegance" with the "Smart Flush" option will meet your needs...check it out here: Raritan Elegance toilet

If it doesn't, cobbling together parts of different toilets is not the answer...you won't be happy with the result. Nor will you be happy with a "motorized" manual toilet. We'll find you the right system.

Hose: Use ONLY Trident 101/102 for toilet and tank discharge lines. Use Shields or Trident #148 for sizes smaller than 1".

Tank: Ronco Plastics Ronco Plastics (no relation to Ron Popeil and his pocket VegoMatic) is your best source for a tank...they make TOP quality thick walled rotomolded tanks for a very reasonable price--which is even more reasonable if you order it through the online store on this site sbo.com plumbing and have more than 400 shapes/sizes, over 100 of which are non-rectangular...and they install fittings in the sizes and locations specified by the customer when they make the tank.

You're obviously gonna need some help spec'ing out the system, and I'll be glad to do that. But first, spend some time reading my book AND the discussions on this forum....you'll learn a lot.

Hi Peggie!

Thanks for the quick reply! I've studied the Raritan "Marine Elegance" for a couple of hours now, per your suggestion. You're right, it looks great. There's conflicting data on the dimensions, I might be able to make it work. I'll take my calipers to the boat tomorrow, and maybe put in a call to the company.

I would love to find a complete solution in one box, but I'm still willing to build "The FrankenHead" if that's what it comes to. I have time, so I'll keep studying before pulling any triggers. ;-)

Cheers!

If you'd like to brainstorm in more detail than is practical in a discussion forum...

Send me an email (click on my name above my photo on the left and follow instructions)...

Vic Willman is the ONLY person at Raritan that you want to talk to...give him a call at 800-352-5630 x 6.

Peggie is right, of course.

OK, I'm a believer now. No more talk about building the frankenhead. I think the SeaEra is going to work just fine, besides, nothing else will fit. I am going to install the Purasan too, as well as a new holding tank.

Before that though, per Peggie's recommendation, I'm going to get the electrical system all up to snuff. I'll get back to specing out the new head as soon as I finish the electrical job.

Thanks so much Peggie!

We have a SeaEra and it works well. We looked at a couple of different options and also decided the the SeaEra would be the best fit.

IF you can hook yours up with the fresh water system, I would suggest that you do. You are in the bay, so it is even more important. We have a raw water flush unit and the pump is noisey. When you live in salt water you also have the problem with the little sea creaters that will die in the raw water intake.

Good luck. You will like the unit.

Glad to help!

SeaEra is a good choice...and I second Steve's recommendation to go with the pressurized flush water model. We can discuss the rest of the system after you get the electrical done.
