Seamed Corian

The Corian countertop in the galley has split on my 356. Since I have Corian in my kitchen at home I know it was not seamed but custom molded. I spoke with Greg Emerson at the boat show. He asked that I send him some pictures, which I did. The split is between the sink and the refer/fridge. The response I received from customer service is that "they" not Greg, checked with the cabinet shop and customer service was informed that the Corian only comes in standard widths and has to be joined. Has anyone had a similar problem? I will post a photo of the split later.

I comes that way only if the customer orders it that way. It should have been one piece. Regardless, it's a mfg defect which H should correct for you. Don

Mine is also cracked !

My crack is in the same location as yours. A representative from Hunter inspected it recently and stated that they couldn't do anything about it. His advice was that I should grind some material off an another part of the countertop, mix this powder with clear epoxy and insert the mixture into the crack. I have not done any experiments with this yet, but I wonder if it really will be a cosmetic succsess. If you can get Hunter to fix it please notify me. Good luck, Mark

cracked corian

corian is routinely seamed in house installations and you can't find the seam-even years later-Hunter should fix this, the counter was either made wrong or (more likely)not properly fitted and mounted. My 356 hasn't developed this problem yet... any corian installer should be able to repair the countertop invisibly, but Hunter should own this. They should also be able to give you smoe scrap material ti use for the repair filler

Not a new problem.

This problem with cracked Corian is not a new one. My bet is that the material is not supported properly. Considering the way a boat flexes and bangs in heavy seas, it may be understandable. Be sure that there is some support under the Corian where the break occured, or it will probably break again.

Corian Service and Hunter

I know of no less than 3 Hunters in the Kemah area that had this same problem. It is my understanding that Hunter took care of it. My Corian has not had any problems. Generally, I have not heard of situations where Hunter turned their back on their customers but I have read some comments in this forum that were less than favorable about certain dealers. I suspect that it could be a dealer interface problem. Sometimes the dealer will tell you Hunter won't do anything and they have not even talked to Hunter about it. Some dealers are lazy and stupid just like some of the people they deal with. We have a pretty good dealer here so we might not see some of these problems first hand. Press on and don't give in--Good Luck!

No Corian For Me

After reading all the negative posts about corian counter tops in boats, I think I lucked out by having one of the few H 35.5s with the traditional laminate materials for counters. Fred Miller M Squared

My 35.5 has corian..

.. and the boat has had plenty of pounding over the years in rough seas, but the counters are unblemished after 10 years. From what I can see in the pictures the problem appears to be a support problem from below. Corian can be repaired so that you could never find the crack when finished. I agree with Steve that some dealers just don't want to be helpful while others are very helpful. I would suggest that you call Hunter rather than take the dealers word for it. Hunter has always come through for me.

Mine got fixed

My 356 developed a crack (not a straight seam as shown in the picture) over the 1st winter storage. My Hunter dealer took care of coordinating its repair, through Hunter. As I understand it, there were a whole bunch of other Hunters that developed cracks during their first year of service, and Hunter made arrangements for a Corian repair "expert" to swing through the area and fix them all at the same time ... mine included. The repair went well, and I cannot see any sign of where the crack was. The crack was in the same general area as you describe (between the sink and the fridge). So far, no additional cracking, but winter #2 is close at hand.

Rob, our 1991 P42 has the original Corian...

which still looks like new...no cracks and you have to look hard for the seams. I'll take Corian any day over laminate. Terry

Corian Repair

Rob - The corian on my 7 year old H37.5 split two years ago. I was not successful in getting a response from Hunter other than try local source for repair. I contacted a local firm in Hollywood, Md. They said they couldn't repair it. If you find a means or source to repair, I would be interested. George Dibble S/V WindHunter wndhtr764@aol.com

Looks like a seam

Rob, Sorry to hear something negative about your beautiful boat. From the photos it looks to me like they manufactured the countertop with a seam and it broke at the seam - hence the nice straight break. As you pointed out, Corian is manufactured in only two widths and as Chuck Wayne mentioned in his reply it is routinely joined in invisible seams for home use. Someone will be able to fix this - Hunter, Norton or a local countertop shop. As several of the comments suggest, get the fixer to look at how well it is supported underneath. Good luck.

The Big Fix

I am happy to report that the Corian counter is to be repaired! I would like to emphasize that I have had nothing but great support from both Hunter and Norton Yacht sales since we bought our 356. Carl is correct about the seam. Corian does come in two widths and the seam is invisible. The repair work will be done at Norton's in the spring when the weather has warmed up. Will send photos. Rob
