Sealant for threads on through-hull valve.

What do you use to seal the threads on the through-hull to valve connections and further along the line. When I was disassembling the water intake and drain lines I noticed that the threads were coated with a rubbery substance, I guess a sealant. Now I need to reconnect the valves, but was wandering what do I use to seal the threaded connections.

Any help will be appreciated,

Are the fittings metal or plastic? You could use pipe dope or tefelon tape. I would use tefelon tape just because that's what i have around the house. If you search Maine Sail's posts you will find out how he does it. And around here not many argue with him

As Don said a good pipe dope, Hercules real Tuff is one of my favorites, or Tefon tape or both together. If you are threading a valve directly to a thru-hull you'll most likely be trying to mate NPS & NPT threads, which is technically a thread mismatch, so the more seal you can create the better.

I am aware of the NPT vs NPS issue. I would prefer to avoid thread mismatch but for now I am stuck with what came with my Hunter 33.

As for using the Teflon tape it would seal probably fine, but I feel that a sealant would also lock the connection in place and prevent it from loosening e.g., from vibrations so I'll try to go with the dope. Problem is, tomorrow all stores are closed.

PS: I have some gasket sealing sealing compound (Johnson Evinrude). Would it work instead?

Why are you taking them apart in the first place.


Which boat did you get? I see the H33 at Hindson's is "sale pending" is that the one?

That's the one. Some of the backing blocks on through-hulls needed to be replaced.

I'm very surpirsed they would need to be replaced already. Was there some leaking left for too long? That area is typically dry.

Nice deal on the boat, and not overly used. I had seen them out a couple of times, but not often. Do you have the boat yet or waiting for all paperwork to finalize. I still have the tarp on ours, haven't been us for several weeks, and this weekend is still debatable. Are you staying at Hindson's ?
