Does anyone know where I can purchace a factory made seahood for our boat? I know I could make one but with all the other projects I'd rather not add this to the "to do" list. I previously posted this request under "ask all sailors" and the only response I got was to repost on the forum. So, any body ??

hey Tammy,

I made one for my hunter 33, it was a job you might not want to do, but you could have someone do it for you. If you want more information from me, I will be happy to tell you what I can about the procedure. I think there are some images connected with my dodger that I posted some time back, you might do a search and see some images that show my seahood. Good luck, David Underwood "s/v Freebird"

How long ago did you post your images?

I tried to search using dodger & the photo forum but can't pull up your post. I have an article from Practical Sailor archives that I could use. Any information that you can supply would be appreciated. I've only had two responses and the consensus seems to be that build it myself. Oh Well....

Tammy, do a search..

from the main menu, using the search key, then select "photo forum" as the place to search, then type "dodger project" and check "match all words".. it will come up, then look to the 3rd (i think) image, shows dodger mounted over the one I built. let me know if you were able to pull it up.

Tammy,

As I remember there were two decks available for the 30 in 1979. one had a standalone seahood fastened to the deck. The other had the seahood as part of a dodger base lip that ran down to the comings. It seems like if you had a "T" shaped cockpit you got the later seahood. Which one is yours? Pat

T

Tammy

I think I have a "U" shaped cockpit

T shaped would be a bench across the stern and then two short benches on starbord/port right? We usually walk across the benches to get get around the wheel on the pedestal. The hatch slides along a track on the cabin roof and is held in place by two teak boards. There are three ridges that run side-to-side along the top of the hatch. Spouse says that they are suppose to break flow of any wave over the hatch channeling the water away from the hatch. I sure wish one of the 2 PO had added a sea hood instead of all the other "mickey mouse" alterations. Well, maybe not, cause I'd have a "mickey mouse" sea hood that I'd be trying to fix.

doger from the helm-inside

Dodger from the helm-inside Tammy Three seasons ago I purchased from a local canvas maker the bimini. He bent the 1" stainless and cut the canvas at the slip. Went back to his shop to cut and sew. $700 which included the helm cover. Last season, I purchased 10 yards of Jocky Red Sunbrella on ebay. Went back to Farmer Canvas and Don built the Dodger over 1" stainless frame for $300 with my canvas. Ian

Here's an option

Tammy, I doubt if Hunter still has the mold for that hood. Being in Maine you should have some great woodworkers up there, have them make you one out of Teak. It'll look Marvelous. If yours is the same as Ivans then you do have the earlier deck. Pat

Ian, is your boat a 1979 model?

Did you run the lines aft or is was that feature courtesy of a PO? My husband wants to run all lines to cockpit. So, the $300 included the tubing, window panels and the labor of sewing? I love that red! What a handsome color. I am going to use a teal color. Do you have a phone number for Farmer Canvas?

send me your address

Tammy Please send me an e to imcgain@griffinmail.com The Meant to Be is a 1979 Hunter 30' 5'4" deep draft Farmer Canvas is in Rock Hall, MD 410-639-7907. Don Farmer works with his wife in a small sewing shop in Rock Hall, MD. It took him one season to get to my dodger as he works to his own pace. All lines run to the cockpit, which were put in place by a previous owner of which I am now number three or four.

Great rig, Ian

Ian, that's a beautiful arrangement you've put together. I also have a '79 H30 with bimini only. I've wanted a dodger, but was bummed about the gap that would have to be left to allow for the main sheet. Your solution is superb! Now I'm inspired to get to work on mine. Tammy, that $300 was quite a bargain, brace your self to pay more. Uggh, sorry.....

Found it !!!

Isn't Don Casey a great resource ! I haven't bought the canvas work book yet but plan to. I remember seeing your post when it was originally posted and will credit you for pointing me in the direction of Sailrite. Was the tubing hard to bend? We have a dodger on our boat but are thinking about building a new frame that is a little more rugged. I am also going to sew a new dodger out of teal sunbrella fabric. The dodger that came with the boat is the same color as yours but whoever made it used white thread (looks really tacky). Anyway, how did you make your sea hood? It looks great ! Right now our hatch is held in place by two teak boards and your pictures look like you have stainless. Is there some sort of channel inside the sea hood that holds the hatch lip down? Our hatch has three ridges to channel water off to the side (I guess), does/did yours?

Nope, I'm going to sew it myself.

Hey John, My aunt & uncle live in Slidell.

T

Tammy

David, How did you build your sea hood?

Boy, did I get sidetracked by Ian's pictures. John Thomas, It's my aunt & uncle that live in Slidell. Ken's not going to sew the dodger, I am. I was responding from home pc where his data is loaded & I forgot to change is name to mine.

Sheet arrangement

Our 37C came , from the privious owner, with a zip in piece that bridges the doger and bimini...It has a zipper in the center of it, that allows the sheet to go almost all the way across the cockpit with the center bit still zipped in..Quite handy after we figured it out..I'll try and get some pictures of it today for you.. Hi Tammy

Saw your note 'bout your aunt and uncle. It's sure been lousy sailing weather around here for the last couple of weeks, but was beautiful in the early Spring. Ahh, life in the swamp!

David

Hey Tammy, sorry, just saw your added post..

I have some additional images I should post that shows everything while I was still building the dodger frame, it shows the seahood and the coaming that I felt was needed to help fasten the dodger to the deck and to shield water from getting underneath the front of the dodger. If you are still interested, I'll be happy to email you in detail any information that you need.
