Seadek versus Nuteak Synthetic Decking

Hello,

I have been contemplating for some time installing synthetic teak decking in the cockpit of my 356 on the floor, seating areas and transom lockers/swim step etc.

I was sold on the foam --Seadek but now that I've played around with sample I'm a little concerned about the durability. With very light pressure I was able to pick the edges/scratch the material with just my fingernail and wasn't that aggressive before it started to break down. And no I'm not Edward Scissorhands...lol.

Pros: the foam comes in at half the price of Nuteak and is easier to remove if desired. One bonus with the Sedek is you can just replace one section if damaged which is good.

However, I'm particular and think I will be disappointed if I go with the foam if it is that easily damaged.

What I love about the Nuteak is you can actually sand the material if any damage occurs. The one con with Nuteak is once it's on I don't think you'd want to try taking it off plus the price is much higher.

Can anyone give me their first-hand experience with either product and tell me what they think would be best investment based on the above?

I understand this comes down to personal opinion and pricing but I was hoping to get feedback from anyone who has had these products installed over a period of time.

See sample photo attached:

Cheers!

A certified SeaDek installed it on my Hunter 46 in the companionway, cockpit, swim platform area, aft lazarettes, gunnel (to provide a grip for our dog) and under the captain seat. It was very cost effective, not permanently glued down since it has a sticky backing and therefore removable, sections are easily replaced if damaged and it is easy to clean.

Thanke sail sfbay for the reply. How has it been wearing so far with the dogs and foot traffic etc.? How long have you had it on the boat?

Looks great!

I had it installed in late May 2019. It has held up well to my 14 lb dog and foot traffic.

Thanks! I think I'm now leaning back towards installing the Seadek. The ability to remove if desired and the cost are more attractive over the other options on the market. Thanks for the feedback. I will post pictures once the project is complete.

I would Google it. I know a number of people who have used Seadek and other EVA products, and they say the practical life span is about 5-7 years, depending on use. They consider it more of a maintanance item than something permanent. That said, they like it, because it is softer.

Can't have everything. For a cruising boat, I prefer grating (installed it on my last boat), so the grit falls through and I don't have to clean it often. It also raised my sight line 1-inch, which was a plus. For my current open transom boat I prefer the factory texture; the rain washes it clean and I've never had to sweep it.
