I am the new owner of a 1984 Catalina 25 wing keel, my first real sailboat. Is it safe to open the head and drain seacocks and leave them open for the duration of a day sail? I was advised that leaving these open longer than necessary could cause water to enter the boat. After sailing season, I plan to use the winter to learn more about the systems on the boat, but for now I'm having too much fun sailing her on Lake St Clair. Thanks for all replies.

Stu, thanks for the info. Leaving seacocks open for will make life easier. I've been running back and forth from the cockpit whenever someone needs to use the sink or head.

Dave,

As Stu notes its fine to leave them open when on the boat. A good practice is to teach everyone that regularly sails with you how many there are, where they are, and how to shut them off, and hows to use the bungs.

PS - If you ever charter a boat and they run you thru a skipper checkout, first thing to ask them when you step on board is 'show me all the seacocks'. Quite often the checkout will end right there.
