this week I tried to open my through hull bronze seacock for the holding tank and apparently broke the pin that opens the ball. the lever moves with no resistance now. I believe that it will have to be replaced. has anyone had experianced replacing this seacock while the boat is in the water?

Not sure if it's possible

I've replaced seacocks on my boat while on the hard and I cant see how it would be possible to do while in the water. The only thing I could think of is possibly inserting a wooden plug in the thru-hull from underneath the boat but I wouldn't recommend it. There should be someone on the outside of the thru-hull supporting it so it doesn't spin when you remove the seacock. Since you never know what kind of problem may arise (the laws of Murphy) It's best to have it hauled. You could replace it on the slings, if everything goes smoothly it doesn't take too long. Good luck, Manny

Maybe But??????

You could sink your boat if something go's wrong while the boat in the water. A diver might be able to do it with backup pumps onboard but you risk taking on alot of water. If you have trouble coming apart do to corroision. Or you could wait and just use pump out station until haul out. Nick

Changing a thru hull while in the water, although possible, is a big gamble, with very bad odds in favor of your vessel becoming a submarine. Don't do it.

Its possible

... to do with a little diving, depending on the location of your overboard below the water line. First use one of those wooden pegs to plug the overboard from outside the boat. Once the plug is in place, you can replace the valve. Remove the plug and QA your efforts.

I replaced ball valve in water

Just the stuff off value not the thru hull fitting. I priced a diver and a haul out, the diver was cheeper. The diver showed up with a plastic bowl thing with rubber gasket around the lip of the bowl. The bowl was held to the outside of hull over the thru hull and the value was opened and sucked the bowl onto the hull. then I unscrewed the valve and replaced. Probably a cup of water entered. The diver showed up with some mechanically expanding rubber plugs in case there were complications.
