seacock choices

hey everyone. in the midst of buying the five seacocks for my vega. Anyone know much about buck algonquin seacocks? They are priced about the same as the grocos, but the grocos list their ball valves as being chrome plated brass, as opposed to the buck algonquin being chrome plated bronze. Obviously i'd prefer the bronze, but none of the big marine stores seem to carry the bucks, except for jamestown distributors. They seem to be just the ticket but i've never heard of them. Anyone have any experience with them? Thanks so much.

Karl,
I installed Groco's a couple of years ago. About 6 months later they were "recalled" and I had to install the 'free' replacements, with no compensation for the labour involved.
Apparently the problem was a poor quality stainless steel shaft, which was replaced by valves with bronze shafts. So Groco would be good ... now that they're on their "quality control" toes.
Apollo and Conbraco are two other alternatives.

AND .... were I to do it again, I'd go with Marelon through-hulls and valves. All you ever wanted to know about them at

I'm amazed how quickly my shaft zinc turns to mush, and am concerned about any other bronze fittings on the boat.

Are you plugged into shore power? Do you have a galvanic isolator installed?
If not and you do install one the zinc should last a lot longer.

Thanks for the heads-up Brian. I'm not connected to shore power, and have no 120 volt system on board, just batteries and solar. I think there's a lot of stray current in my marina :-(
