So will be changing the sea water impeller this season. In the past I never used any compounds on the cover gasket similar to the thermostat housing and never had an issue. Would love to hear feedback from what others do….. dry fit or gasket compound.
Thanks

I use a very thin film of silicone grease.. like Super Lube mostly to hold the gasket in place during assembly.. because the pressure in the pump is so low, there is little chance that the gasket would be blown out with a good flat fit between case and cover.

On my engine, the pump faces aft and downhill so I need something to just hold the gasket in place while I install the cover plate. I've got a little jar of petroleum jelly that I use a dab of to hold the gasket. The normal use of the jelly is to smear in my mustache to seal the bottom of the dive mask while snorkeling. Always good for an item to serve multiple purposes.

I have a rubber O ring gasket. I use the same material with it that I use on the gasket of our well filter..

Food Grade silicone....

Hi,

I also use a thin film of silicon grease to hold the gasket in place. I figure it cant' hurt.

To be honest, I haven't changed an impeller in years. The last time I did it was probably 5 years ago.
