Steve and Mike, Today I did not get the outcome I was hoping for. Sea trial was fine, engine survey revealed minor issues, but when the boat was hauled out the hull surveyor identified some problems. A few minor blisters, a more serious problem which needs attention with the keel and rust. Numerous pitting of the cast iron keel which requires work. The other major issue, which I am seeking input on, was spidering of the hull just forward of the keel. Surveyor suspected it was more than just the bottom paint. There appeared to have been some work done there before. Further investigation below deck revealed some spider cracks in the deck below the vee berth. He said this needs to be investigated, and repaired. He suspects the boat may have come down hard off of a wave or something creating tremendous stress on the hull. Is this a show stopper, or is this repairable damage? Thanks for your assistance.

May need another opinion!

Tom: I spoke with Mike today. Did not realize that you were this close to making a deal. Is spider cracking that you are talking about is ahead of the liner? If it is, I would think that this should be very repairable. If it is under the liner then I think I would get another opionion from someone that knows about these Hunters (or any boat with a liner). The blisters and the rust on the keel are fairly normal. The yard should be able to sand blast the keel, fill the voids and put 2-3 coats of epoxy sealer on it before they repaint the bottom. Be sure that you check with the locals on which bottom paints work in your area. Be sure that he verifies the cross member and the compression post. Ask him to put his findings on this in writing. The cost for this repair is about $2000-4000 depending on the problem. If you are getting a good deal, all of this may not be a big deal. If you are paying on the high end then everything should be right before you sail away. If they are going to step the mast, you should be sure that they extend the tube and reseal it too. You can contact me offline at steve@sdcsoftware.com Good luck!

Choice

With fiberglass, "anything" is repairable... question is, do you want to deal with it??... or if there are "lots" of choices out there that would fit your requirements for a boat, maybe you don't want the hassle with this one (which model is it??).... ... when we bought our 83 H34 it had alot of rust on the iron keel.... would take YEARS (eons?) to rust enough to be a problem, altho it looked like heck.... stripped

Not all that bad of a problem

I also agree with one of the other responses. With fiberglass anything can be fixed, usually better than new. If you are getting a very good deal, fix it when you are having the bottom done. Rust on the keel is no problem, it will take a long time to be any real threat to safety; but, scrape it off and take care of it. The spider cracks are generally stress related, but that does not mean the area has been compromised that would be any real safety issues. Having said that, always take them out and shore up the area so that they don't appear again. I would say, all in all, price right and all that, after a firm repair quote, don't let those problems deter you from a good boat that fits your needs; even though, as one response said, there are other you can take to the dance instead!
