My Endeavor 37 with a perkins 4108 has a sea strainer located low, near the aft of the engine, difficult to access. Is there any problem if I relocate it higher and up front so I can easily check it? I don't think it would cause a siphon hazard but I wanted to ask here just to make sure. It might need to suck the water about 4 inches higher than before.

Once water is flowing it should not make a difference. It might make it a little harder to get primed. My strainer is above the waterline so I just pour some water in it each spring to make sure it primes easily.

Ran,
I relocated my Groco 750 strainer from an awkard place to a more easily accessible place. It serves my Perkins 4.107 as the raw water strainer. It is about 2 feet above the raw water pump on the front of the engine. You will want to be sure you get a good seal on the strainer so no air leaks into the lines or strainer. I believe the strainer sits about a foot above the waterline. I prime the strainer after cleaning it out and then close the top. Open the thru hull and start the engine. No problem with water flow. Always check that water is exiting the exhaust once the engine starts.

I installed my Groco raw water strainer in front of the engine for easy access about ten years ago. It’s a couple inches above the waterline and I’ve had no issues with it.

According to the instructions that came with my Vetus strainer, it is recommended that they are mounted above the waterline so that it can be cleaned out without flooding.
