We have day sailed Cortez on Hobies for up to 20 miles off shore. And done 3 day trips, (up to 30 m. off shore) in our Macgregor 26 water ballast. The big problem comes from what is known as "Northers" which usually blow in the winter, 3-5 days and nights, winds 30-45 kts. Because the Cortez is long and narrow, these storms kick up large waves, close together, without a good form. So it's Rough. Everyone puts in, including shrimp boats. Best advice is always know where a safe anchorage, protected from the north is. Wait out bad weather, don't be fooled by a slacking of the wind in the morning, thinking its over. Many have set out then and been sorry. There are also very strong currents especially around islands and headlands because of the severe tides. Get a good cruising guide. We'll be there next spring in our new H260. (the Mac sailed fine, we're just getting to old to rough it)
