In tracing down a @#$! leak on our 84 H31, I think I have narrowed it down to the sea hood. I want to remove it and rebed. How tough a job is this? Am I wasting my time? Can the sea hood leak? Thanks, Bob

Sea Hood

Bob, I had the same problem with my H36. The traveler is mounted over the hood so I had to remove that first. When I removed the screws holding the hood down I found a factory defect in the fiberglass beneath the forward edge. It was a one inch hole in the glass. Since the repair three years ago the boat has been dry. By the way on the 36 there is no need to seal the hood because beneath it there is a continuation of the cabin and deck fiberglass.

Info

I guess? It's the fiberglass piece that the plexiglass compaion way cover slides under. The cowl vents also are mounted on this piece. Hopes this helps, Bob

It's a pain in the ass but can be done.

Bob: You can remove all of screws, and the traveler and then cut the original caulk. This should get it but....... I think that your problem is that the tracks for the campanionway hatch trap water. The forward end of the track is open (just a channel). There were some posts on this in the last couple of years. What you may want to try FIRST, is have a cover made for the hatch and see if that keeps the water from getting in the track to begin with. This protects the interior of the boat from dirt, dust and rain too. If your leak stops you know what caused it. If it does not you know that the track is not the problem. If you decide to remove the hood, You will probably find that if you put some rubber stops at the end of the track and then use some caulk to keep them in place, this should help.

Clean

This is a real messy job that will require someone down below with towels, use a pressure washer, or a good strong stream of water on each side of the companionway, where the hatch slides, wash from the front and from the back sides, a LOT of gunk will come out each way, that may do it for you, if not I also reccomend the canvas cover to stop the rain water from the channels.
