Going to try and remove the Sea Hood on my 1990 30 FT Hunter...Any suggestions on how to make it easier...any chemical to make caulking soft for easy removal? Has anyone tried to repair a water leak under a Sea Hood before?

Hatch rails may be the problem.

Jim: A couple of years ago, I removed the Sea Hood on my 1989 33.5. (I believe the 30 has an identical design.) I found that there was not much under there to leak. A few screws hold the hood in place and they were well sealed with caulking. Our leak, as it turned out was the aluminum side rails that allow the hatch to slide open. The caulking under them had some gaps that allowed water to trickle into the main cabin. Unfortunately you can't remove these rails and re-bed them without removing the Sea Hood. We used a sharp knife to cut throught the silicone caulk in which the sea hood was bedded and scraped away most of the old caulk with plastic puddy knives. I would clean with Interlux 202 solvent to make sure all caulking is gone before rebeding. Before removal you might take a pencil and lightly mark the sea hood at the existing caulk line, so that you can mask the sea hood as well as the deck for a nice neat edge on the caulking when you rebed the hood at the end of the project. As I recall lots of caulk was needed to rebed the hood and fill the trough into which it sets so as to avoid water and dirty stuff puddling in that area. Buy an extra tube and return it if you don't need it. It is not a complex job, just removing screws and scraping caulk. The key to success is getting all the old stuff out and cleaining throughly before re-caulkling. I used a good mildew resistant silicone for this project, but there are other alternatives. Warning: This project takes awhile, and replacing the sea hood and getting the caulking to look just right at the end may get a little intense if the beer consumption is a little high during the scraping and cleaning phases. Isn't boating fun.... Good Luck! Ron "Counterpoint"
