do owners leave the sea cock open or close it every time you are finished sailing? What are the pros and cons?

close all seacocks/thru hull

All seacocks/thruhulls should be closed when off the boat(done sailing). The big con here is that your boat might sink if a hose broke or started leaking. the big pro here is that you boat won't sink from a broken hose if you do. It might be inconvent to do but much safer to close all seacocks/thruhull,especial if off the boat for a long time (the week).Shut them off and sleep better !

Usually closed.

I close mine but sometimes forget :( Pro: If a hose were to burst your boat won't sink. Con: If you forget to open it you'll overheat the engine. You can get around this by hanging the ignition key on the intake seacock. Ron

Shut, When I open also do quick check

of raw water strainer and stuffing. Got a little sign over battery switch to remind me to open.

Sure I'm 'supposed' to close it, but...

this is really the only seacock I leave open. Im afraid of leaving the marina with it closed. I read one post here where someone says he closes the engine valve and hangs the engine key on the valve handle. This is a great idea but far too complicated for a simple guy like me. ;)

Nah, never close 'em.

If you have proper hose, just work the valves once in a while. The biggest danger to hose are rodents. They love to munch vinyl. In that case the bilge pump will handle the leak. Your bilge pump is left on isn't it? Anybody had bilge hose 'blow up' from the pressure of one foot depth?

Closed

At first I did it once in a while. I have now made it a part of the Sunday night close-up, it only takes a minute, and there are no worries. John J

Closed -- always.

I close the seacocks whenever I leave the boat. That's why there are seacocks. It's nuts to stake the life of a $100k boat on a couple of rubber hoses. For those afraid of forgetting to reopen the raw water intake, the engine sounds different when the raw water seacock is closed. Leave it closed, start the engine, and see what I mean.
