We had a bit of rain this weekend, and I found my boat and trailer pointing up to the sky! There was a substantail amount of water in it. It looks like the cockpit drains clogged with leaves, the rain filled up the cockpit, pitched the boat back on the trailer, then collected all the rainwater for the day into the boat.

Anyway, it looks like a good solution is the c-22 scupper kit. It's a bit expensive at $150. I also saw an internet post where someone just installed some 1 5/8" pvc couplers after drilling holes in the transom. Any opinions on either method? #2 sure sounds cheaper :)

I have a new home-made tiller in the garage that has varnish curing. I'm hoping to get out one more time this weekend before the crummy summer sailing weather.
Thanks

Funny but I'm working on the same project. My C22 cockpit drains occasionaly clog up too. I've been lucky so far, and was contemplating both of the solutions you mentioned. The retro kit is expensive. The plastic pipe thru the transom scares me because the transom is two seperate pieces, and a leak would allow water to enter the boat unter the boat under the cockpit floor. I decided to install 90' white plastic thru hulls in the floor of the cockpit and seperate straight plastic thru hulls in the transom. These can be sealed with 4200. I then will connect them with a piece of rubber hose. I've seen other makes of boats that have a similar set-up. This will cost about $60.

On the trailer

If all you are concerned about is when the boat is on the trailer, then perhaps temporary hose or plastic pipe with perforations would help? The idea here is to make for a larger number of places that the leaves would have to clog up to stop the outflow. You would remove this for sailing. I would try a u-shaped section of garden hose where the u reached ~1/2 the cockpit length. The two ends of the hose would rest in the existing scuppers. The bottom half of the hose would be a trough for water to escape through the existing scuppers, with holes cut in the upper half of the hose for water to get in. The hose should be smaller than the scuppers, so they still work when not clogged & again: remove the hose for sailing.

Not foolproof - a huge enough number of leaves could clog it - but it would be cheap and easy to try. And, no boat modes that you might regret later.

Just a brainstorm, an idea,
OC

This is an easy addition I bought a tool that allowed me to install the 1 1/4" tubes when I added them to Lat Penny. Tool was 35.00 tubes were 3.50 a piece. Hardy any of the boats are the same between the liner and hull Last Penny was no exception 1/4" on one side 3/8" on the other. Once the area is filled it's just a matter of drilling the hole and installing the tube.

I had to replace the scuppers on my Capri 22 last year. They're the same size as the C22 kit from Catalina Direct. The kit came with everything necessary to do the installation including plywood to reinforce the transom, a hole saw, and the tool to crimp the edges of the brass scupper. The instructions seem fairly straight forward and easy to follow. You have to return the saw and crimping tool within 2 weeks (I think) or pay a substantial fine.

you could also just tie a tarp over the cockpit when the boat sits on the trailer--I do this and just lay the tarp over the mast, tying it off to the trailer on either side. Keeps most of the crud out of the cockpit.

A week after purchasing my 1980 C22, I noticed the cockpit drains and thought "you have to be kidding me". Then I thought about the transom mod. But hate making structural changes. Now I leave the Bimini up when stored at the marina. Then I put a cinder block under the rear of the trailer and cranked the tongue jack up until it's tight. With OldCats suggestion (or a variation) you should be okay, short of a hurricane.

Tarp word of caution - each winter I sling a tarp over my mast that covers just about the entire boat. The first year I got a nasty surprise when I went down to check on it after the first big rainstorm. One side of the tarp had filled with water and sagged into the cockpit, being held up by the lifeline/stanchions. There must have been 20 or 30 gallons there. I then built a PVC frame to keep it from sagging/filling and haven't had THAT problem again.

NEVER park a C22 under a tree!! There are several in kemah that are destroyed boats just for that reason! It just makes me sick. Someone could be getting some use from those boats.

Transom drains are definitely my choice. I fought this futile battle for years with my 84 model. Never could understand the wimpy cockpit drains. Remember, they both drain into a T that chokes any microscopic debris into a single drain through the bottom. And for those of us who keep boats in wet slips the scenario is that on a Monday when you are out of town a 3 inch and hour rain arrives, fills the cockpit, which then overflows into the cabin, the bilge pump kicks on, runs the battery down, and the following weekend when you take the family out "boating", well, you get the drift. Transom drain without a doubt.

My boat is parked in the open, not under a tree. I do have several oak trees nearby, which when there is any wind or large amount of leaf loss can deposit leaves in my cockpit.

Can you explain the problem with parking under a tree? I assume it is because the boat will fill with leaves, stay moist and rot. Is that it?

Thanks

the cockpit fills with leaves clogging the drains and you have a boat full of water instead of a boat in the water. I am going to install plastic thruhulls on mine.

If you order the kit from Catalina Direct it will come with the flange tool.
