Catalina 30 Gulfport
I just bought an 1986 Catalina 30 standard and one of the scuppers does not drain at all. The other drained fine until I tried to clean them. I wraped a tshirt around a hose and both blow out water great until I take the hose out then they stop draining. Any ideas?

Here comes the contortionist moves. Get underneath and remove the hoses. Then clean them out or replace.

You should be able to find some little guy in Gulfport to do it for a case of beer. :)

My guess some kind of baffle or flap worn out that only releases under pressure

It wouldnt make sense to put any kind of check valve there ..if the cockpit gets drenched it has to drain NOW

I agree. But you never know what you will find on an old boat

Have you tried blowing water backwards thru the scuppers? I don't know how much you would learn from that but worth a try. Could be the way the hoses are configured. Forget the little guy. Drink the case yourself. You'll be much more flexible afterwards. Squeeze in and take a look see. Oh, don't forget to leave some beer for the guy that has to grab your legs and pull you out. Good luck.

CAL 35 Cruiser #21 moored EVERETT WA
Guystapo,
I own a Cal not a Catalina, so for what it is worth, some drains use a flapper in the line. It is designed to allow water to drain out but attempts to stop water from coming up the scupper tube in a following sea. Some are made with loops so that water has to go up and over the loop to get out. Another one of those designs to minimize water flowing from the outside into the boat through the scupper. Still there are the WTF designs where the scupper is connected to internal plumbing drains. Run water into the scupper and if the thru hull drain is closed it backs up into the kitchen sink or some other place to be discovered.

I would encourage you to explore all of the plumbing lines from the scupper to where it empties overboard. If you see any connections in the hose other than where the hose connects to the scupper drain or the thru hull overboard you may find a flapper/check valve or a place where debris is blocking your hose. Maybe a lost bikini part from a previous owner.

If he hose connects to another hose not the overboard thru hull then you may have a WTF design system like mine where the water drains through some place like a sink drain. Then you have the opportunity to design your own solution.

I share mine as I get around to fixing it. Till then I keep the drain through hull open when it rains.

You share yours?

I just replaced all the drains (top, thruhull and hose) on our Aloha 32. No amount of beer can make this a fun task. Go find that "short guy" and buy him whatever he wants to drink!
