Just a thought, i have a 1970 34C Tartan that I've been working on for over a year and am about to splash her.
Has anyone ever used a scupper (flap style) to cover the exhaust outlet, to help prevent water backing up and through the muffler into the engine?
I've never seen it, but what do you think?

Usually on sailboats, the exhaust hose goes up under the deck before looping back to the outlet fitting. That keeps waves etc from getting back into the exhaust system of the engine. I don't know if your boat has that now, but I am pretty sure that it did when new. If you like the flap, install it but if you have a proper loop, it is not necessary.

Thanks for the info. Yes it does have a loop, and I replaced all the plumbing. When I tore down the motor there was water in the number 3 cylinder, so I thought that the scupper would be added protection.
What do you think?

Like a rain cap on a diesel truck or heavy equipment engine, there's no harm in having it as long as it opens reliably, with little resistance.
