Removing the screws that hold porta potty down. I need to remove the factory brackets that held down the porta potty. There was a thread on here about someone who removed the screws that hold the porta potty down and that they were so long that they protruded into the ballast tank and after removing them he had a leak. I need to remove the factory brackets to put in another potty that won’t fit inside the brackets and I concerned about doing this. Anyone have any advise or in-site on the matter? Is there any way to know if the screws protrude into the ballast tank or not. Can anyone think of a way I can check this. I don’t want to get in the middle of the gulf of mexico and then discover I’ve made myself a leak. The tank doesn’t leak now and I would hate to make a leak simply by removing some screws. Thanks James

I unscrewed mine..

to make room for a larger porta potty. I unscrewed them and removed all the brackets. I then used some peel and stick shelf brackets to hold the new potty in position. The screws in mine did not go into the tank, but I was unwilling to drill new holes, and the stick on brackets work fine for me. I haven't yet filled the old holes, but most likely will use some gel coat to patch the holes.

Go ahead and take them out. Insert a piece of wire

down the screw holes and see how deep it goes. You should be able to tell if they go as deep as the tank. Long screws in that location may sound as something a PO may have done but them factory boys sometimes hit the ball out of the park. If you spring a leak after removing the screws just apply a sealer and put the screws back. Do you feel lucky?

The tank

From the original post, I gathered that the cabin floor is separate and above the ballast tank and that the screws might go through the floor _and_ through the top of the tank. The mention about resealing the holes in the floor sounds like the floor is assumed to be the actual top of the tank. I wonder which it is? I'd have to hope the tank is a separate structure/container of its own, with a gap in between, and sealing the porta-potty bracket holes in the cabin floor would not seal any screw holes in the top of the tank.

They did not go through on mine

The previous owner of my boat never had the brackets screwed in but he had the screws and the brackets to provide me. I had four holes for the brackets and they were jsut open holes when I got the boat. My point is that the floor in the cabin is NOT the top of the ballast tank at least where the porta-potti is. I had some short stainless screws that I installed the brackets with. Good luck, Jonathan
