Does anyone know the thread size or where I can obtain screws used for assembling the cover plate over the impeller on water pumps for 3HMF Yanmar engines. I have several that need replacing. I remember an advertisement for a supplier that sold screws that were knurled so you could hand tighten them, but I have not seen this add for some time. Any help with this will be appreciated - Thanks.

Doesn't show

I just checked my Yanmar manual and it doesn't show the size of the screws/threads. When I replaced mine in the 3HM35F, I had to take one to the Yanmar dealer. The phillips-headed screws have been replace with a nut head and are less prone to stripping than the older type. They were brass and were very soft, causing the phillips heads easily stripped. But you may be able to order them from: http://www.marinedieseldirect.com You will also find the "Speedseal" that you spoke of in your post.

Metric Screws

I don't remember the size of the screws, just that they are metric and I was able to get stainless steel allen head replacements at a Service Star Hardware store; I imagine Lowe's or Home Depot also have those nut / bolt / screws/ misc hardware dispays as well. I did have to cut down the length with a Dremmel tool. I hated the OEM philips head brass screws.

Speedseal

is the name of the company. www.speedseal.com is the web site. 800-675-1005 toll free to England. I used their kit on my C&C with a V-drive and it sure made changing the impeller a lot easier. They were really great to deal with. My pump had been changed out and they sent the incorrect parts the first time. They just sent the replacement parts at no cost and when I said I would return the old parts they said not to bother. A great kit for $60.

Tight fit for Speedseal

The 3HM35F water pump is situated in a difficult place to remove the impeller even with a Speedseal. I usually just remove the pump and work on the shelf. The Speedseal will be very handy in this situation. Using S/S screws on the pump plate may not be too wise. You are now adding a dissimilar metal to the pump that could cause corrosion and failure to the pump housing. If Speedseal or replacement nuts are the same material (brass - I know the nuts are) as the housing, you will be OK.

Use vise grips

One suggestion to the removal of the water pump brass screws is to first "break" the threads with a vise grip plier. Using this method with save you from stripping the threads on the brass screws. I also replace the screws with new screws after removing the inspection plate. These are available in a package from my local Yamar re-seller dealer. I have a YSM12. Ian s/v Meant to Be

Agree with Ian

I agree with Ian on the use of the pliers and the replacement of screws. The proper brass screws, even from the dealer, are not very expensive, and wether it is you or the next owner who has to open it up the next time, nobody wants to deal with striped/gouged screws, especially if they are not at the dock.
