Continuing my refit of my "new" 30T....I am adding a Garhauer rope clutch and a 4 in line deck organizer to the port side...I read from previous postings that there is an aluminum plate under the mounting pads, and drilling and tapping is advised over screws...can anyone share some guidelines on the ss bolt size used if anyone has done the same...dia and length will help. The organizer comes with bolts thru the sheaves which I assume are the fastening bolts, but they seem too long...

Bruce: You need a matched set of drill and tap. You will probably use something like 1/4" x 20 bolts. When you go to the hardware store they have charts to match these up. The only thing you will probably NOT know is the length, but the old ones are probably a good indicator. Be sure to caulk them with a good caulk like Life Caulk or 4200 (not 5200 or any other permanent product). When you put down the caulking be sure to only seat (loose contact) the organizers and clutches. Wait 24 hrs before you tighten everything down. This will make the caulking act as a gasket.

If

you are installing the clutch as a replacement, then you can use the same mounting hardware. If it's a new installation, you can drill a pilot hole (1/8"). If you contact aluminum, then you'll need to drill the correct size and tap it. After you tap you can measure the depth for bolt length. The installation should also include countersinking the drilled hole. The countersink will act as a sealing washer when sealant is applied around the bolt. Failing to contact aluminum, means using the through bolt method using backing plates on the inside of the cabin. Again countersinking the bolt is needed to seal the through bolting.

Did the same thing

Did the exact same retrofit to my 1990 30G last spring. Use the bolts that came with the line organizer, and match the drill tap to it. I believe they were 1/4 inch. It should come with the correctly sized drill. The aluminum plates are there, take my word for it. I used LifeSeal for bonding. If you are mounting the clutch on the cabin top, be sure it is in exactly the same place as the clutch set on the starboard side---the plate is not large on the cabintop. In all, it's a a pretty easy job.
