Although we love our 356, we have a continuing problem with the screens on the Lewmar opening ports popping out. Does anyone else have this problem? Has anyone found a solution?

Yes and no, in that order

I don't understand why it is so darn difficult to make screens that fit the ports. Our screens are a tad bit larger than the ports they are supposed to fit. What a pain. Lowest bidder problem? I'd love to hear what some others have done to lick this problem too.

Like to know how to install them?

I tried to install the port screens this weekend! How do they fit? Do the tabs come out and then go behind the rubber gasket? Instructions are poor. sv Persistence

Yes, Lewmar screens a real pain

Note: I'm Toni's husband, replying here to Al and Jerry. We track the Forum on different computers -- she on her PC and me on my Mac. ;-) Working from below (inside), I insert the tabs between the rubber gasket and the aluminum frame. Then, holding the screen's inside end tabs, I push the sides and top into the same spaces. Next, I go topsides and push back any end or corner that has popped through. The result is a kluge! Screens appear warped. They are the weak link in Lewmar's generally excellent product line. Toni and I feel there has got to be a better way. No problem using our aluminum-framed top hatch screens. Maybe Hunter/Lewmar could use the the same approach for their opening port screens using just 4 holding tabs -- one on each end of the frames.

A pain, allright

I have the same problem. According to Craig at Norton's there is no good solution. Has anyone tried to call Hunter? Or Lewmar? Ivan Bekey

356 Screens..the ones you love to hate

1) I insert mine only from the outside (Toni, I would lose my mind trying to do them from inside). I put the tabs on the bottom and insert those first underneath the rubber gasket. Then slowly work the thin screen edge underneath the gasket all around the window until it's "in"...and I use that term about as loosely, as they look. Note also that there is embossed on the screen the word "outside", so those little grab handles go outside, but to this day I don't know what they are for. 2) I had one or two of them pop out when heading up wind into mild chop from 25 knots of wind. 3) Here's the worst part...........when I leave them IN and it rains, the rain slowly works in under the gasket and through capillary action and some weird form of suction, it builds up and then 'whooshes' into my aft cabin. I've been woken up at night with this strange sound like a human sighing and then the water gushes from the window onto my aft cabin bedside table. 4) Needless to say, I don't use the screens much anymore and just invite the mayflies into have lunch and dinner on a regular basis now. 5) Lewmar should be ashamed of such a shoddy solution. IS there a workaround from any other manufacturers? Thanks deac

Oceanair? for 356 screen problem?

Does Oceanair make screens for the side port windows? I don't have a problem with the big topside deck ports, we're talking about the little ones in the head, kitchen and aft cabin

Ops Sorry Wrong Windows

What I get for trying to do this late at night! Have the same problem with our port windows. I push from the outside, my wife pushes from the inside. Kludge is a understatement! Jim S/V Java

time for action

Thanks for all your responses. I guess I'm not the only one with this problem. I know that Hunter reads this web site, and I'd love to hear from them with a solution. But instead of waiting, I'll batch all your responses and send them to Lewmar and Hunter. Of course, I'll post any answers I get.

quick response from Hunter

Within 20 minutes of sending an email to Hunter with a link to this thread, I got this response: Toni, Thanks for the input. I wasn't aware of the difficulty. I have forwarded this on to Lewmar. cheap quality to say the least.....

We are disappointed with the quality of the small screens & we prefer to leave them out. It takes my wife & myself to even "try" to put in the screens & even then they pop-out. Hunter should definately address this issue & send every 356 owner a complimentry set of screens that can actually do the job.....

Thank you Toni

Thanks for doing all of us 356 owners a big service by contacting Hunter and complaining. I am looking forward to Lewmar's response. Ivan Bekey H356 #157

Lewmar's response

I got a call from Beth Russell at Lewmar (800 - 362-7212 X.225) who read this thread and indicated that she would have a sales rep call me. I'll post again when I hear from him. If there are any other 356 owners who have had a problem with the screens popping out, please post here. THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. Ivan - Thanks for your kind words.

Lewmar Screens

The dialogue concerning Lewmar screens goes across the board for any model. My L43 suffers from the same problem. I'm sure interested in the recommendation. Another subject to be discussed at the Hunter get together in Mystic for those of us who can make it.

376 also...I know I'm late

376 has the same problem...we take them down in the salon area...rough seas make them fall out and damage (nick) the salon table. Very poorly designed. ...Larry...

Hunter 356 Screens are horrible to say the least

My Husband and I tried to put in the screens the other day for the first time. He was on the outside and I was on the inside. No matter what we did, the screens did not stay in. I guess we will have to live with the bugs.
