Hi all,

When I purchased my 310, the previous owner had screens for all port holes and hatches, but hadn't installed them. Most went on fine, but I can't get the screen for the large forward hatch to stay put - really a cheap set up. Anyway, I finally gave up and decided to look for an alternative for the forward hatch. Thoughts? Also, what are folks doing about screens for the companion way?

Also, since I'm not near the boat right now, does anyone have the dimensions for the forward hatch and for the companion way?

Thanks,

Richit

Forward Hatch

FWIW, I don't care for the screen set up on my 2002, but I did see that for a newer one (probably 2006-2008 - can't remember the show) that the new hatches from Lewmar had the screen on a hinge at the top that was nice.

For my 310 the PO got some really nice teak frame screens that go in where the hatch boards do. I have seen similar ones at the Annapolis boat show. I think those are about $200.00 and worth the money.

Thanks guys. I like the screen in the hatch slats. I haven't seen those. And, I'll look at the ones supplied by the host.

We got great screens for the companionway at glebecreek@mindspring.com. They fold up and fit the top and 'front' of the companionway. As far as dimensions go, every boat is a little different, so we had to send our dimensions to Glebe Creek, and they custom made the screens.

Screen ideas

On our 310 #118 we retrofitted the hatch screens with a hinge from Lewmar that allows the screen to fold down from the top edge for hatch opening or closing. Ordered through West Marine. For the companion way we made a fold-up screen consisting of a 1x3 board at the top and bottom that fits in the slot, a peice of screening attached to the boards at top and bottom, and some sunbrella fabric glued along the sides of the screen. It rolls up to the size of the top board and we store it in the v-berth on the shelf along the side. Cost maybe $10 at the most.

Both sound like a PaulJ kind of upgrades. Do you have the part# from WM? I have hull 185 so I suspect they are using the same hatch.

My boards are nice, but I would like to see a picture of your setup as I just can't picture it.

Got the Kit

I was a bit confused, but a trip to West Marine got me a kit. They kit is basically a hinge that replaces two of the little twist out tabs that hold the screen in. There is only 1 kit that fits all of the Lewmar hatches. West Marine in Alexdanria, VA could find one of the 5 they showed in stock so I bought it.

The WM part number is 2678233. I put the hinges on all 3 hatches. Great product, easy to install but a little pricey for what you get - little plastic moldings. But hey, it's a B.O.A.T.

Companionway screen - simple and cheap

I'll try to remember to take a picture of the screen this weekend and post it.

Bob, you are right about the price, ...

but the convenience will be well worth it.

Hinge great - instructions confusing

You would think that Lewmar could do better on their instructions. I was really confused when reading them, and then I looked at my hatch and the parts in the kit and realized all I had to do was unscrew the 2 latches on the top and screw the two hinge pieces in their place and snap the other pieces on the screen and I was in business. The directions went through all this rigamarole about measuring and cutting the frame and matching the parts up.

But, I really like the hinge even if it was way over priced.
