Screens Driving Me Crazy

We bought a new Hunter 320 last year and absolutely love it. One nagging issue is that the screens are very difficult to latch into the port holes. The screens seem just a bit too thick for the latches to lock them into place. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Once I get this fixed, then I have the perfect boat (of course until I trade up for a bigger model!!) Bob

Fixing latches

If your latches are like mine, then I know your frustration. To 'fix' the problem you have to pop the cap off of each of the clips and back the screws out a little bit. This allows them to then swing over the screens but they are sill a pain in the neck.

Still in therapy .................

...... having dealt with the same problem on our '99 H310. Finally solved it by removing each latch and inserting one or more washers under it until it had the clearance to accept the screen. Regards, Island Hunter

Guess I was just lucky

Either I was just lucky, or my dealer had already adjusted my screen latches. All the port screens fit fine. The only one I have trouble with is the forward hatch screen, and come to think of it that was missing on delivery and had to be ordered (so Dave may indeed have fixed the rest of them). So Now I know how to fix it as well. Thanks Kenneth.

No need for screens in California

...because we don't have the bug population. I took all of mine and stowed them in a bin underneath the forward bunk. They were a pain anyway. And you have to remove 'em before you can secure the hatch. I recommend that you strongly consider moving to the lower left coast where we have too much traffic, earthquakes, fires and no bugs. The Darn Latches!

Not having the bugs to deal with I also stowed the screens however I did have one issue with the latches. Being 6'4" I was consistantly feeling the pain of the very sharp edges of these little plastic latches digging into the top of my skull!! I'd finally had enough and shaved the very sharp fins down to a point where at least they did not draw blood...

A different Approach

I got this idea from a Tartan and built a custom wooded frame on hinges that replaced the factory screens on the major hatches. The frame is two piece, with the top frame attached, using the same holes as the original screen clips, to the boat and the bottom piece has the screen. I used a magnetic latch and it is simple now to open and close the hatches. Check out a new Tartan if you want to see one.

Used Velcro

I cut sections of fiberglass screen material and sewed a thin strip of velro to the perimeter. I then used matching self adhesive velcro to suround the hatches. Words great, just press on the velcro screens when you neeed to and and rll them up and throw them in a drawer when you dont.
