scratch through decals

Hey All,

I have a gelcoat scratch to repair. The issue is that it goes right through the boat name decal. The scratch is around 1/3" wide and 1/8" deep. Will I need to remove the decals? Been thinking about renaming anyway but not sure I want to deal with that at the moment.

This will be my first gelcoat repair.

Removing decals is easy. Hair dryer and a scraper/razor blade will take it right off. Removing the lighter "shadow" from where the letters were is more difficult. A cleaner wax will help even it out.

If you have access to a wall paper remover try this first. I have tried other methods and this was by far the best.

If you vinyl is checked and cracked, then that may be easier with an Eraser on a drill. They can be found at automotive paint stores. They are used to remove pin striping from autos.
