I have a '92 26S with a scratch right down to the fibreglass above the waterline. Believe I have the factory hull coating. What is it likely to be and how fix? If this is already covered please point me to the source. I live far from a marine supplier and/or expertise so product names etc. would be a big help.
Thanks.

I just finished repairing several scratches on my 26D and it wasn't as intimidating as I imagined. I did spend some time on Google and You Tube looking up videos and tips. Some of the key items that I learned are:
1. Prepare the area by sanding. Gelcoat does not penetrate spider cracks, so use a pointed can opener or Dremel tool to make the scratch deep enough for gelcoat to fill up the space.
2. Clean the area thoroughly with acetone
3. Use masking tape right along the area to be repaired. By taping closely along both sides of the scratch, you can fill the scratch and use a plastic scraper leave the gelcoat just slightly proud of the surface to minimize sanding.
4. I used Evercoat Marine Premium Gel-Kote polyester gelcoat product from the hardware store that worked OK. In hindsight, I should have purchased a thicker product since the scratch was fairly deep and required two coats to fill it.
5. After allowing the gelcoat to set about 20 min, coat it with Mold Release to seal out the air, or apply cellophane or wax paper to seal it. Otherwise, the gelcoat will not hard cure and will remain tacky.
6. Sand thoroughly using a sanding block with 500, 1,000 and 1,200 grit wet sandpaper. Pinish off the entire area with polishing compound and then rewax the area.

The scratches are barely visible, just slightly whiter than the surrounding fiberglass. They should eventually fade and match the rest of the boat, but I have some older repairs that are stii visible. You can try adding some color to the gelcoat, but that seems riskier trying to get a perfect match.

I have Used Tjar's Procedure and ....................

................... had excellent results. I'm lucky in that my gel coat is the same colour as any pure white gel coat. Repairs are invisible.

The only change I would suggest is to use waxed gel coat. It sets in air (without covering) which makes the procedure much simpler.

Thanks a bunch. Could you give me a Canadian supplier for these products?
Likely hard to find in dry Alberta.

^ does west marine have this equipment too?

fwiw I bought mine in 2005, so price is probably a bit higher today.

(I had no idea it was even possible..... for colored hulls it would be priceless)

I've got gelcaot and wax and resin all from a local boat repair place here in London Ont. (Heritage Marine) They are very helpful and will sell me what I want in what ever quantity I want. ( I got black gelcaot in a old olive jar last time because that's all I needed. They poured it out of a 1 gal container for me.) That's service.
When the time comes to repair tjar has it on the money.
Check out boatworkstoday on youtube too for great info.
Pictures are some repairs I have yet to do.

Finding, your first picture looks like you may have a stress fracture with some underlying structural damage to the fiberglass. If you just slap on some new gelcoat to cover it up, you may end up doing the repair again. You might want to look into laying up some new fiberglass cloth before putting on the gelcoat. Again, the internet is your best friend for "how to" videos.
