Schnauzer Poop

I know someone has to have live aboard pets. I have a 15 pound schnauzer and we plan on taking long trips on our catalina 30. Arnold will need some place to go while we are at sea. What are some of the solutions to this problem that you guys have come up with? I can build anything, so if anyone has seen anything that someone has had custom built that's ok too. Sailing dogs.

I sailed for years with my Schnauzer, Sophie. Now with a Wire Terrier. But I was never on the water more than eight hours and they seem fine with that. One of our fleet to the Bahamas this past summer had their Retriever with them the entire year. Again, waited until shoretime(try getting an eighty pound dog up and over the Erie Canal walls!) And thank God for walk-through transoms when it is dinghy time.

What we read about mostly here on HOW is the use of outdoor carpet. Just a small piece with a grommet in the corner and probably bound. Train the dog to use that. Scoop the poop and put it in the head unless you are offshore. Then drag the rug behind the boat to complete the cleaning.

I have seen sod

I saw a guy how had a piece of sod in a litter box. Also have have heard of some dogs who just will not go, and hold it in for days. Maybe you can try to start to train at home to use box. Good luck

I'm also interested in if there are any other issues with cruising in the Caribbean with a dog onboard. At least years ago you couldn't bring a dog into the UK without having them in quarantine for 9 months. Are there similar issues with any of the British-related islands? Is it really a practical reality to do extended cruising in the Caribbean with a dog on board?

Just a month or so ago I read about some "Pad" that you can train your dog to go on. The couple was a regular contributor to a magazine, can't think of her name. They found it worked so good that they had a hard timme getting the dog to go when they were on shore, it wanted the pad.
Check Blue Water Sailing or Cruising world. It was in one of them just inn the past month or three.

The name is "Potty Patch". Its chemically treated so that the initial training is sooooooooo much easier and faster. It contains a porous 'grass', a drainage layer under the 'grass' and a 'collection tray' underneath. Works great for pups and young dogs. If you have a high pressure deck wash it will make the whole system very easy to use. Only problem is it is very lightweight construction and easily washed overboard by boarding waves, so you have to tie it down or store it at other than on the foredeck of the boat in rough weather.

The Islands of the UK haven't had a case of rabies in forever, to keep it that way they have the quarantine. Unless the Caribbean is rabies free as well (and I doubt it is) I don't see a reason for such regulations

I'd point out that you can get your dog a pet "passport" that allows it into certain parts of the caribbean without the need for quarantine.

We have litter box for our cat. It fits purfectly under the v-berth, in front of our porta-potty. I saw him use it once when we were heeled over about 20 degrees. He didn't seem to care.
