Ok, I'm asking a lot of questions. Does anyone with a H26 have a Schaefer Snap Furler. I'm trying to decide between the CDI FF2 and a Snap Furler. I'm trying to decide what to buy Jason

Snapfurl on 26.5

Jason, I had the same dillema last year and I am happy to report that the Snapfurl 700 I put on my 26.5 has worked flawlessly. The main reason that I went with the Snapfurl is the ball bearings and the construction. The Schaefer in my opinion is a better built unit and will out perform the CDI any day of the week. I must also add that we have a Mac 26X in the family with an FF2 on the bow, so I am familiar with both systems. I put up the Schaefer yesterday, and the CDI today. If you have a chance, take a look at the CDI unit next to a Schaefer and make your own choice. I also like the open drum configuration of the Snapfurl as I like to be able to see how the line is loaded on the drum. I think the Schaefer takes a bit longer to get set up initially, and when taking the rig down, the drum and the swivel have to come off. The CDI systems do not require dis-assembly of the drum. With either system, the key is keeping the luff straight during storage. I also prefer the round luff extrusion of the Snapfurl versus the flat foil of the CDI system. Installing the two part snap-together luff on the Snapfurl was a cinch as well. Good luck with your decision, Clayton S/V Walkabout

Snapfurl on 26

On the 26 ,in either choiceof furlers, you have to shorten the head stay,in adition I installed a stalock fitting w/fork to a new steamball w/eye,which is the original mast attachment in a 94 model. I think later boats had a t-fittng.(on the 260 you dont have to shorten) whith the stalock is a real simple job. At the base plate you have to add an extention double plate which must be at least 4 inches long,in order to clear deck. I use the Snapfurl 500 unit since the head sail size allows it and you will save a few $$$. the snapfurl has a lock ,which prevents removing the drum for trailering. I whent with the snapfurl cause i think its solid built, easy to install and has an open drum so you can detect trouble. On the other hand ,the CDI leaves a free line to rig a spinaker, though it should be higher on the mast. Fair winds. Ulises
