Hello All, My boat is wet and I'm trying o get her rigged as a cutter again. The PO had her sloop-rigged. Does anyone have any photos showing the staysail boom rigging? Thanks. Jim B. s/v Leben ist gut H37C 143

Have you considered a boomless staysail?

Jim: Have you considered a boomless staysail. Harken has an excellent setup for this setup on their website & in the catalogue. We are planning on doing that exact thing on our Hunter Vision 36. We will have a self tending jib with a roller furler. So sweet. We have an lady sailor that owns a Santa Cruz 50 on the SF bay that has just this setup. She claims that it works well and is a nice setup especially when there is a shorthanded crew. Take a look at their site.

staysail

Jim: I've never had a boom on the stays'l. The P.O. removed it. It seems to work just fine. RS

Internal Pictures

Hi John, I saw your picture and took to the boat yesterday. THey were most helpful. It seems the PO changed the outhaul from the 4:1 purchase to just a straight pull hooked to a cleat at the front of the boom. The PO left a box of parts, which did include a 4:1 purchase tackle, but I'm thinking it must have been used on the traveler. Thanks, Jim

Boom Parts

Hi Ed, thanks for the parts. I have the stay, boom, gooseneck. I put them on yesterday. The outhaul had been simplified. I think I need to disassemble the boom and re-rig the right the correct outhaul. Then rig a sheet and will be ready to go. Thanks for the picture. Jim B.

Topping lift.

I like Richard's topping lift. Mine is similar except that I use the whisker pole ring as the top attachment point. My boat originally had a small wire mounted much higher on the mast, the attachment point is still up there. For running the sheet I long ago removed the original where it went forward under the boom, then over to the toerail, and back to that starboard cleat mounted on the side of the coaming. I was always tripping on it. I use eyebolts with a shoulder to replace the mast partner bolts. Then I attach blocks to those to direct the lines through the deck organizer. For the staysail sheet I ran it to that port cabin winch and cleat.

Topping lift

I use the whisker pole ring also, which avoid adding more hardware, but have a pennant made up to size with a stainless carbiner on the bottom. So when the sail is raised and lifts the boom, it is easy to unsnap and simply hook the bottom onto the ring where it stays out of the way. It is essentially the saame as Richard's, from his picture, except for the carbiner and it is made of rigging wire.

Scott, No Problem. No pictures necessary now. I'll bank the favor for future needs. Thanks. Jim

Topping Lift

Ed and Sanders, Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I do not have a wisker pole, so no ring. A future enhancement to consider. Same with running the staysail sheet over the cabintop... Thanks again guys. Jim

No dorade guard?

John, many of us do not have that guard. That was added on later models, around 1982 or later I think. Same with that little locker for the winch handle, not on my 1979.
