Peggy, I think my Idea of how much saturation,of the cushions, is more than you intended. I was going to make them very damp-- I calculated 2-3 gallons to do beds and cushions on 40 foot boat. I dont mind the expense,I'd pay almost anything to get rid of this *#x! smell ! Thanks John

You don't want to soak 'em...
They'll take forever to dry! Just use enough to penetrate the foam completely. Then put everything out in the sun for a day to dry (that is, if you have any sun...we haven't seen it here for a week). Since sunlight and fresh air are a key "ingredient" in killing molds & mildew, put the off the job until you do have a sunny day.

Drying Cushions
Based on past experience, when the cushions are wet and placed on end the water will gradually travel to a low point where it can be squeezed out like a sponge. Even so, like Peggie says, it takes a LONG time to dry - at least several days if they were wet enough to be able to wring water out. Also, don't use stuff with bleach on the foam. Speaking of weather: Today is "opening day" of the boating season in the Puget Sound. Don't know what the weather is like in the rest of the country but the forcast revised the snow level from 2,000 feet up to 4,000 feet with lows in the upper 30's in some places! When is it EVER going to end!!! This is MAY, isn't it? My haulout was revised from today (to avoid the rain this Saturday afternoon through Monday) to next Tuesday (rain forcasted again for Thursday). Gotta hustle and get all my gear together. Also, one can't trust the forecasters.

Mildew and Cushions
I'm allergic to molds and mildew and I hate the smell anyway. We replaced all our cushions and beds, interior and cockpit and replaced the foam and upolstery. Yes it was expensive. We also pulled out all the foam backed hull liner which was all moldy and replaced it with fuzzy liner which is not foam backed. Places that were hidden like inside cabinets we just painted with an anti mildew paint. the cockpit cushions we replaced with a very open cell foam which drains very easily and web nylon material covers. Now no more mildew and we love it.
