Stamford, Ct. local knowledge needed

I am helping to deliver a boat south in May and need to hop a train in Stamford. Is there a town or public dock where crew can be dropped off? Close to the Amtrak station would be nice.

Also, anything to watch out for entering the channel? The boat draws 6.5'.

Safe for non local to do at night?

Thanks

Well the train station is probably only 5-10mins from the marinas in Stamford. You can get on Metro North or Amtrak from that station. You may need a taxi to ferry you from Marina to the Train station. Not sure on bus routes.

Entering foreign port that is unknown to you at night is generally a bad idea and to be avoided if at all possible. Leaving a bit earlier so as to get there during daylight is a better option most of the time. Or leaving later and getting there just after daybreak is another option.

That said, Stamford's entrance is pretty straight forward, even with your draft. Avoid being east of the marks approaching the harbor as there are rocks and a shoal area off the point east of the harbor entrance. The breakwater is fairly well marked and extends off to the east and west of the channel entering Stamford harbor.

The plan is to arrive in the afternoon Dog. But plans don't always work out and knowing things like how much ambient light from the city there is and how well marked the channel is will be helpful. We will have a liferaft but no dinghy so shuttling will not be possible.

A master of understatement there Tim. :D

As I recall, the train station is quite convenient, but beyond a short walking distance from the marina. I'd avoid downtown Stamford, where the station is, after dark. Check the train schedules - it's a busy commuter station, but has a "train regularity drop off" after the downtown NYC gang finishes their martinis and pours off the trains in the weekday evenings. OOOPS, it's NOT "Mad Men" decade anymore!!! Limited/reduced weekend train schedule, too.

There is a Brewer's about 3000 ft from the Amtrack station. You might be able to drop them off there.

If you want to jump ship in Milford, I can shuttle you to the train station. Which is also a short walk from the transient dock.

I'd point out that Milford's a bit tougher an entrance than Stamford, which is relatively straight forward.

I second that opinion

We entered and exited Milford one day through 2-3 foot rollers going right into the entrance, which has a jetty on one side and a beach across most of the mouth. Once past it you are fine, but if there are any kind of seas running it can be an entertaining place to enter. The entrance is only about 100 feet wide.

Lots of good info here. I would second the advice for heading to Brewers Yacht Haven West. It's the one closest to the train, and you could walk if you have to. It's less than a mile through a generally commercial area, though there is a church and a few houses closer to the station. The more questionable sections of town are more to the east. Tug & barge traffic IN THE HARBOR ITSELF is possible, going to or coming from a concrete mixing plant further up channel, so be aware.

I guess maybe so. It's a narrow but straight forward channel from the outer marker. Living there makes it very familiar, so I can't offer an objective assement.

I have only done Stamford a couple of times. There is a fair amount of light around, but the entrance is well lit. But it's too far away to offer a ride. :)
