I.ve been visiting Santa Barbara for the last two weeks and had a chance to check out the harbor and a few local establishments that serve the boating community. Harbor seems pretty exposed but a reallt pretty place. A lot of people seem to just anchor in front of the beach with no protection at all. Any of you west coasters have the scoop on Santa Barbara as an anchorage? Thought you'd enjoy the pictures.

SB is a beautiful place, and it's reflected in housing prices. Every year, there are some boat-owners, live-aboards, who anchor off the beach, leave the boat unattended for certain times, either at work or off pursuing other interests, and a storm comes thru, boats get blown onto the beach. Some times it's a true cruiser, but most times it's someone using an old boat for cheap housing.

Yes, Santa Barbara is a roll anchorage. Very uncomfortable. It is actually 40 miles east of Point Conception. There is no anchorage at Channel Islands Harbor only guest slips at $1 per foot per night.
