Head Smell
I am replacing my sanitation hose and have a hose that runs from the head towards the holding tank but before it gets there is valve the a handle. It looks like if valve handle is pointed in on postion it goes to the holding tank but when it is pointed down it goes to a hose back towards the head but I cannot see where it ends up. I cannot find out what this is all about. I do not have a macerator pump on the boat and not sure where it would be if I had one. Thanks Cary

Cary, I was just checking out the parts manual to see if their is an extra hose. Only one hose is directed into the tank, so I will assume that waste was directed out the vessel prior to the tank. You have to trace it back to a thru hull for discharge! I am not sure what model year you have, but the only thru-hull should be for the water intake for the head that acts also acts as the head sink discharge. You can see it all if you go to. www.catalina30.com. Go to Technical library - 30 Parts Manual - Section 4 (systems).

Cary, Im just guessing but in my cat 30 the head discharge goes to a Y valve which directs effluent either to the Holding tank or out the discharge thru hull. You have got to open things up and trace that hose - you have got to know where all your through hulls are on your boat.... most early 80's cat 30's would have a head intake thru hull under the v berth port side access from the head (small inlet) and a thru hull dischrge for effluent in the same area. See attached drawing

Cary.....MAKE SURE YOU LOOK CLOSELY AT THE HANDLE! If yours is like mine, (and I think mine is original equipment) the direction of the handle indicates the CLOSED position which is very illogical. If you look closely at the pointer on the handle it says CLOSED. One position is overboard and the other is to the holding tank.

I changed my hoses too...but one thing i think I get a lot of mileage from is I switched to flushing with fresh water from the sink. that way you dont get sea growies under the bowl rim. This is of course assuming you sail in salt.

The schematic does not show the placement of an anti-siphon hose.

Do you not need one? Can you assume that the flapper valve at the bowl will stop the back flow, or if the bowl is indeed above the water line?

Thanks,

Good observation intersailor. I have an anti syphon loop on both my discharge and head inlet and wouldn't be without them, although from the drawing many must if they have the original Catalina setup !! My two loops come up through the head counter against the hull liner and have a wooden panel over them. I've seen quite a few photos of Catalina 30 heads without the syphon vents showing anywhere in the photos.
