Sanding off bottom paint

Last week before the boats get put in the water I watched a variety of methods for hull prep. To my amazement there were many who power sanded the VC17 antifoul and wore little protection (masks, gloves, and coveralls). How bad is this stuff to inhale and should we all protect ourselves from this dust? Don't eat my dust...

Paul, nasty stuff to the environment...

Most yards this side of the border will not allow you to power sand or wet sand hulls without a drop cloth and tenting. It leeches into the soil and is considered a hazardous waste. I always use a respirator while sanding the hull by hand. Terry

Also illegal this side of the border -

Amazing how many boat owners neglect the current environmental regulations in both countries. Not just with bottom prep either. Cheers,

it is nasty!

not only is it not envior friendly it very very bad to breath ! so be sure to use a mask/resperator when you do sand. There is also a system to hook up a shop vac to your sander or some yards have "vacuum sander" that they require for sanding,(they rent them out) they are better for you and the enviormental issue. In short best to protect yourself from breathing the dust or having it on your skin.It is also easier to clean up.Different area of the country have different regulation about sanding dust and haz mat/enviromental,so check with local regulation for you area.

Kudos to Paul

Being surrounded by a marina that is indifferent to environmental concerns and peers who apparently scoff at simple health precautions, Paul has nevertheless shown some personal judgement and common sense. While he may be the only owner to use a respirator, an orbital sander & vacuum, a ground tarp, and perhaps even a bunny suit, he will be four-square with quality yards and yachtsmen everywhere.

Watch out when power washing too

I was helping out a buddy power wash his hull on a Kelt 7.6 last week. I was wearing a black nylon Nike jacket. I began to see myself getting covered in small droplets of blue bottom paint!! We weren't trying to blast off all the paint mind you, but it was quite clear to me that we were *vaporizing* the stuff. I don't know if we inhaled much, but I wasn't pleased. I'd say a respirator and protective clothing should be worn anytime you're working on bottom paint!
