Peggie, I know your feelings about the old SAN X systems but the one on my boat still works fine and doesn't stink even when discharging unless the chemical has run out. It is hooked to a vaccuflush toilet.

So here's my question. The big drawback of my current system is the 7.5 gallon holding tank. I've been looking at the sealand HTS 28 gallon system which offers choices from just the tank ($200) to the tank with macerator/discgarge pump and vaccum generator ($800). Any idea if my current treatment system could be upgraded to the larger tank without any major modifications?

Any holding tank will work with a VacuFlush toilet

However I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. 'Cuz if you're in waters where the discharge of treated waste is legal, you have no choice but to either treat and discharge the 9 gallon tank or hold it for pumpout...you can't store it in a larger tank after it's been treated and then dump it, 'cuz once it goes into a tank, it's no longer considered treated waste. And I don't know how you'd be able to put a second tank ahead of the SanX treatment tank unless you want to put a y-valve in that provides a choice of going into the tank or going into the SanX.

The SeaLand HTS 28 gallon tank would only replace your SanX...can only be emptied via pumpout in your waters.

You have to be in open ocean at least 3 miles from the nearest point on the whole US coastline to use the tank with macerator/discgarge pump...

And if your toilet is a VacuFlush, you already have a vacuum generator.

So what exactly ARE you trying to accomplish?

And btw, your treatment tank actually holds 9.5 gallons.

Sorry Peggy. Evidently I wasn't very clear in my question or my explanation. I am the second owner of my 1988 SeaRay 390 express. I have upgraded some systems and the boat is in exceptional condition.

What I am trying to accomplish is simple. I want to replace my 7.5/9.5 gal treatment tank with a 28 gallon treatment tank so I do not have to go through the treatment cycle so often. I have to empty the current tank at least once in a weekend. A larger tank would allow a longer time before I had to go through the treatment cycle and would also give me more flexibility on when and where I can run the treatment cycle.

My understanding of the HTS28 system is that you can buy it in separate pieces or as a whole system starting with just the tank and going up to the complete sanx system that includes a macerator/discharge pump, treatment chemical pump, tank watch monitor and vacuum generator (which is more quiet and efficient than their older models).

As you noted, I already have a vacuum generator and for that matter, a macerator/discharge pump, chemical pump, and tank watch monitor. So...my question was will my current parts from my old small tank fit a new HTS 28 gallon tank? If so the price would be reasonable and make it a "doable" project. If not, I would likely look into Type I systems other than sanx or simply stick with what I have.

The current law is, sadly, very confusing when it comes to inland rivers thus explaining the multitude of interpretations but, according to our local USCG, while Type I systems can't be used on "land locked" bodies of water, they are legal for overboard discharge on free flowing rivers.

Thanks for your response.

You can't do it that way

You want to cobble up your own Type I using a larger tank and the parts from your SanX. It wouldn't be a CG certified system...and the CG doesn't certify boat owner one-offs. The mfr has to submit a prototype, and then every unit produced has to be exactly the same, for the system to be legal. The chemical, the amount of that chemical, and the length of time the device has to run cannot be changed.

So your only options are a larger tank that has to be pumped out, or a different treatment device....or maybe not...I have an idea that MIGHt work.

You and I should actually talk about this, 'cuz it's pretty obvious that you don't really understand which components are part of the VacuFlush TOILET and which are part of your SanX, or exactly what the HTS28 is..and it's gonna take a lot more typing than either of us want to do to get you sorted out and decide how best to end up with a system that'll make you happy.

I'll send you an email with my contact info.
