Hey Y'all,

Good morning mariners! Yesterday I asked about the AMF Sunfish and what your experiences were, and I was very glad to read the entertaining results from everyone (including Kermit ;))! Today I'm gonna move things up in size a bit, and touch on the San Juan race designs. The models I wish to discuss are the models built in the late 60s, early 70s as either oceangoing or class-based racers; I want to know what everyone thinks about them because I've been selected to join a crew in Seabrook to race a San Juan 30. These boats are Bruce Kirby designs, so I'm hoping I'll like it!

We had a San Juan 28. While smaller I do have some observations. The cockpit drain was tied to the galley sink drain with an underwater through hull. If the drain clogged, it would overfill the sink and drain inside. Ours had no easy way to install an electric bilge pump. The bilge would require hoses and wire over the floor.

The hull was heavily built with hand laid FG. Sailing hardware was good quality, but wireing and plumbing were awful. Once again different boat, but the berths we're way too small. We restructured inside to make it work.

I owned and raced a San Juan 24 for over 10 years, sold it to my son-in-law, and have crewed for him for another 15 years. Good fast boat, we have won many flags and the fleet trophy 13 times.

San Juan 30 is a great boat. Very fast and fun to race. Built by the Clark Boat Company in Auburn WA. I've been through the plant when it was around.
