Drop Me A Line

Michael - send me an e-mail and I'll reply back with three articles that you might find useful. If you don't have my address in you e-mail list just do a search in the Owners Directory. -= John =-

Weather on this route can be unpredictable

With our Legend 43 "Rivendel II", we have made two Hawaii passages from the West Coast of North America, first in 1994 (from Santa Barbara) and again in 1997 (from San Carlos; Sea of Cortez). the key weather issues are as follows: (1) pay close attention to the cyclone season off Baja (for a historical overview of probabilities in different months go to attached link); (2) be aware of where you are in the El Nino/La Nina ENSO cycle (it determines whether you can expect unusually weak or strong tradewinds); and (3) avoid the strong depressions during the winter and early spring period, especially if you want to go far offshore outside the Tropics (in March or April 2003 a Hunter 450 was lost this way; look in the archives under "Hawaii"; in January there was already a detailed discussion of weather issues which was sadly ignored). Fair winds and following seas! Flying Dutchman

Henk, John - Thanks! Sean - OK!

Emails to Henk and John about details. And, Sean, I probably will be looking for crew! I hope my brother will go with me, but two really won't be enough, so....... Maybe I should put one of those ads in Cruising World, huh? "Looking for female crew, 35-45, athletic, blond..." Nah. At best I'd be keel-hauled by my lady (who won't be doing the passage), at worst someone would actually answer the ad!!! Michael O'

If you've never crossed before you might consider

heading off a few days ahead of the Trans Pack in July. Alot of other boats on the passage, plenty of help if you get in a bind, and you can monitor race weather weather reports on the way.. Dick McKee S/V ONE9TEEN

Tel Her Your Brother Selected the Crew!

No problem - just tell her that your brother slected the crew! There's lots of "crew" meeting places on the internet so posting an ad well in advance would help you find someone good. Dick's idea was a good one tying in with the TransPac.

Check the World Cruising Routes

Check Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes. It is a great resource. Why stop there? Just keep on going. Good Luck. Michael

Great Christmas Gift!

Yesterday I put Cornell's "World Cruising Routes" on my Christmas list! Thanks to you and John for that one, Michael. As for "just keep on going", that may be the plan - I'd like to sail from HI up to AK, then down the inside passage to Seattle. Maybe I'll need to retire first? Michael O'
