Drop the hook

We have spent a week in San Diego the past 2 summers on our 40.5. Both times we started off by anchoring in Mariners Basin (Mission Bay). Good holding and an average depth of about 15 feet. This probably is the nicest beach you'll see the whole trip. (They limit your stay to 3 nights.) Glorietta Bay (at Coronado Island) also has great holding, though it can get a bit crowded with loval transients. But this is another favorite of ours, with a gold course directly astern. You'll need a permit from the local harbor office, but you can do that over the phone ahead of time. (3 nights max). Friday night thru Mon morning, you can anchor at La Playa. It's between SW yacht club and SD yacht club. Whatever you do, don't miss Mission Bay.

Mariner's Cove Mission Bay

Check out Mariner's Cove in Mission Bay also. Protected and very nice. No check in required. Easy walk to shops and resturants. One PS though. We ran our 40.5 aground on a bar, so stay in the middle and watch the sounder and tide. PPS, we were able to kedge off with a stern anchor and were just barely moving. (My wife was on the helm while I readied the anchor, but I was rewarded with the Pig award as Captain by my YC.) Rick D.
